Reskin of the DTM Pennsylvania GE 44-tonner into Tropicana paint scheme
This model is a repaint of the DTM Pennsylvania GE 44-tonner by Harry R. Adkins. It represents a “what if” locomotive owned by the busy Foss Tropicana Juice Distribution Center.
This GE 44-ton switcher is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric for the Tropicana Juice Company. It was assigned to the Foss Plant in central Pennsylvania, replac-ing an aging 0-6-0 steam locomotive and numbered 1111 for the birthday of the plant manager’s daughter. This locomotive offered the company quite a cost savings compared to steam and reduced labor intensity. In the 1940s, the steam to diesel transition was in its infancy in North America, and railroad unions were trying to protect the locomotive fireman jobs that were redundant with diesel units. One measure taken to this end was a stipulation that locomotives weighing 90,000 pounds or more required a fireman in addition to an engineer. The 44-ton locomotive was designed to skirt this requirement. This unit has been in constant service since 1953 except for a major overhaul at the North Eastern Railway shops in Pittsburgh, PA. As long as there are orange juice cars to move, this little fellow will have a job.
In the scenario editor it is listed as: “GE 44Ton Tropic.” This model is installed into: Assets\DTM\GE 44 Ton\RailVehicles\Tropic\. Unzip and install using the included RW_AssetSetup.exe installer. Then you must copy the GEOPCX files from Assets\DTM\GE 44 Ton\RailVehicles\Pennsylvania\Engine into Assets\DTM\GE 44 Ton\RailVehicles\ Tropic\Engine.
