Is there a difference between British rail and American rail? I'm building a new route for the American northeast and I wanted old wooden ties. I started using old wood Bath ties. I have the MC&SA route and that looks like it has a different wood tie.

Generally the gauge is the same, but if you want real American rails wooden and concrete head over to 3DTrains.com.
They've made a "ScaleRail" pack wich includes a lot of American rails and there is also a (still very good) freeware low-res version of the pack.

I will go get ScaleRail it sounds like what I'm looking for. What happens if I post my route and the user doesn't have ScaleRail? Does that me the track doesn't show when the route loads?

Yep, that's why you should include a readme file with all the download links. Also helps keeping track of them during the building process.

One for Marc really. Would it be possible maybe to allow route developers to include the freeware version of ScaleRail with their route?

That way there would be less problem for the end users as well as yourself. Ultimately users are still able to head over to 3dtrains and purchase the hi-res version. Seems a little silly to me if users have to go to your site to get the free version, load it all in, then after a while head back again to get the hi-res one.

Would it maybe encourage the take up of ScaleRail if developers could include the free one with their route?

Yeah I can imagine case by case would be better. Authorised redistribution, as you may update something and people will need the latest.

There is this balance of wanting to include all the good stuff yet not making too many steps to install the route. I'm trying to develop with default equipment but ScaleRail is a worthy include. Also I have to keep track of my own DLC so as not to include them by accident. For example I have one route where my train runs the rails through thin air. Apparently I don't have the bridge the developer has in his library.

Just so yunz know, the scalerail folder and the 3D Trains scenery packs are 450 meg. Thats a lot to add to your route download. More freeware routes use scalerail than not, so chances are pretty good that the user will alleady have scalerails installed because of another route they got.
