Now, I need to learn about track laying and all things related.

Now, I need to learn about track laying and all things related. I have a problem. When I lay track, should I use snap to terrain or not? When I'm laying track and I need a straight section, it never works. I try to lay it according to the decals, and I end up with a jagged/twisty track section. The yard is really intimidating. I'm also having trouble with my track rules. What does a track rule do? I edited the SR_Default bin file, to get a maximum yard limit of 10 mph and a maximum mainline limit of 49. When I lay track in the world editor, the right hand flyout shows limit of 50 and 30. This happens when I select yard track, even though I edited the file. I will be adding to this thread when I have questions and problems about track laying.

Thanks very much for any help anyone may offer!

I lay track then bring the terrain up to it.

When you start laying track and pick a track object, there is a flyout on the right side. There are 2 boxes in it to change the speed limit of the track. One for freight the other for PAX. You willhave to do this each time you select the track object. I couldnever make it be the way my track rule states it. There is also a selection box, lookslike abox with broken lines or dashed lines. Chosee it and a gizmo is placed onthe track, you can then move it and select a good bit of track and the flyout onthe right is there to change the speed limits and other things. So you canalways change the speed limit later after you get some track down.

To place a straight section hold control while laying the track out, you will see a yellow guide appear that lets you know you are straight. If you dont see a yellow lines guide box then it is not straight.

I can get a straight piece of track, but it won't line up with the decal.

You will never get it 100% to the decal. Real track can bend slightly over hundreds of feet. In RW you cannot achieve a "slight bend". There are ways to fake it by track from both ends and then joining them with a third, but is tricky and you have to live with the "slight kink" you get.

Bottom line... make it as close as you can to the real thing, no one will know its off by a foot accept you (we have no "land surveyor" equivalent of a rivet counter). You will get more sleep at night when you realize this. *!!wink!!*

Alright. Got a couple of small issues/questions. In the screenshot below, you see 2 pieces of track that were supposed to come together and be one unit. There are 2 buffers present, and I don't know why. The weld function isn't working on it, and it's kinda frustrating. Also, how do I make switches? I thought it was use snap to track, but when I do that, no switches. Just buffers.

The space between the 2 red rectangles is awful big. They shoudl be closer together to weld. Are you sure there is not an extra piece of short track in there?

To make a switch you select a track type then click on existing track and lay track as normal the switch is automatically rendered. Be sure to choose manualor automatic before you make a switch you cant change them once done with out redoing the switch tracks.

I tried that. I have snap to track on, and manual junctions on. I lay the track, and when it snaps to the track I want to join it to, it turns pink. I know it is supposed to turn pink. When I left click to finish the placement, I get 1 buffer, and no switch/junction. I tried it once before and it worked, but now it won't. This one has me stumped. !*don-know!*

Maybe you should try it with out the decal turned on? Just guessing here. I never had the problem you have, but the gap between the red rectangles is still too big for sure.
