REA Depot..... first attempt

Unread postby RailWanderer » Tue Jan 10, 2017 2:20 am

Hi all,

I have been experimenting with 3Ds Max recently and wanted to try to build an REA Depot. Its not modeled after any specific design, but has the basic elements of a freight depot. It took some doing and a bit of time, but I think I could do more buildings like this and get faster at it as time goes by. The problem is my age is creeping up on me and staying concentrated is the challenge.

Let me know what you think of this first attempt.

It looks like a building done by one with much more experience. Nice job!

Sure yah, I have some background in 3D but nothing of any significance. This was my first time using Max, and there were quite a few problems to overcome, but I did it. I spent many hours on this project trying to learn something new and to contribute something to the community if they liked it. If accepted I may upload this to the RWA library, otherwise I will reserve it for myself and friends. Anyway, I am very much still learning and always learning and hope to contribute more. BTW, I bet I have 30 saves of the model and about 10 saves of the texture, and about a weeks work in the model itself. But, I have put in many hours learning to use the modeling tools which includes Max, Photoshop, RW_Tools, RSBin Tool, and the almighty Blueprint editor, but still an amateur. Thanks for the kudos guys.

Like Buzz said, this is a good looking model, period. That it is your first makes it even more impressive!

Very nice model and impresive as a first attempt.

May I suggest another version of this basic depot. I see that you have 3 loading ramps; quite unusual and this gave me another idea to give the model an different look yet respecting the basic plan (a standard architectural practice, while adapting to local specificities). !!*ok*!!

Thus, extend the loading platform from the front facade (street side) along the depot side and join it to the track side platform (and eliminating the side ramp). I would make the street side ramp as wide as the double doors (maybe it is already - could not tell from the photo), or make it larger - an architectural trick to indicate the importance of access!

Make sure that your sign is a seperate mapping, this way anyone wanting to adapt your model to a new context will have to make a small texture change. when I model a building I always think ''modularity''; therefore adaptibility.

Bravo, and do continue - I'll be glad to use it in different landscape settings. *!!thnx!!*

Thanks Bernard,

While building the model I had thought about the docks and ramps, and to tell you the truth, it wouldn't be that hard to change them. In regards to the signage, the texture has a separate area that fits only the signs, but all four signs are the same. The street side dock ramp is almost the same size as the access door for freight, this also can be changed. Input is always a good thing in my mind and criticism I don't mind as long as it stays constructive, otherwise I ignore it. I'll make an attempt soon to change a few things. Also, to repaint it wouldn't be that hard. For simplicity I made an area in the texture strictly a base color area for small things like window moldings and the upright canopy supports.

Glad to help and I think we will see a lot of you.

After posting, I had another thought (can't help it, I'm retired). You could make a second version with the track side loading dock going to the left - imagine placing the two versions (fused together) to make one long depot. Hum, just a tought since you have all the componants; but you're the builder and perhaps the client's fund are drying out !*roll-laugh*!

HaHa, *!lol!* Another idea to consider, will do. I spent about an hour making a repaint of this station to show it could be also used as a passenger station, and that it could be repainted. Next the modifications, hopefully the client will have the funds........ !*roll-laugh*! Wow, that additional docking would create a huge four 40ft boxcar loading area, ouch..... !*don-know!*

Great idea to have a pass. depot or combined. !!*ok*!! If you anticipate a pass. version I would advise having stairs, of good width (with a handrail) to accomodate senior citizens - a ramp is not sufficient for good costumer relations !!jabber!!

By the way, where can I buy those beautiful vintage pick-ups?
Bernard

PS to a double-depot, I would had a small icing-station (smaller than the one in RWA) for those fine strawberries and milk **!!2cents!!**
