Problem laying track

Unread postby aksingha » Sat Aug 29, 2015 7:41 am

Hi,
I am trying to build a route and so i downloaded the DEM data and imported it into the game and loaded the GM and it looks good. But i am not able to lay the tracks properly, it is not laid flat on the ground as in the pic below. this is my first time trying to build a route so i have no idea what is happening here. Maybe because the ground is not perfectly flat. So someone please guide me.

have you read the instructions on laying track and what options are available? There is an option to adhere to terrain.

The button is Snap to Terrain. However what I am seeing may be caused by it. If you lay a long piece of track or road and there is a bump in the terrain it will make your tack shoot up in the air. Sometimes it will place the track at the highest part of your length of track.

So you have to fiddle around a bit. Try turning Snap to Terrain off and on and see which way you are more comfortable with. At some point though it will be impossible to make the track at terrain height and then you do a Snap Terrain to Track. If the track is buried under ground while doing this, it will clear the terrain from the track. If the track is in the air, it will bring the terrain up to the track.

This may be a silly question, but have you got the gradient set to 0(ie level?) I'd actually suggest turning snap to terrain off for the time being. This is ok if the terrain for the first half a metre of the track is level, but a nuisance if there's any bit that's at a gradient. I don't use the snap feature. I just lay the track following the curve and gradient chart if there's one available.

As long as snap is off, and the gradient's set to something reasonable, it should theoretically be fine.

There's some videos on Youtube that explain the basics of track laying such as this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K06QiPqGrvk

Hopefully you can get the problem resolved

Thanks again for the help, the snap tool did make the track laying easier. But why is the google map not very clear. I mean i can barely see any detail , i just checked google earth and the images of the station and its nearby area are very clear and i can see the tracks. It is not possible to correctly lay track in editor with the kind of image i am getting. Also the resolution is set to 1280x720 in the GE settings area. Any opinions

Play with the ZOOM feature in the Google Settings.

Go to Tools, then Google stuff. My settings are:

Map Res : 1280 x 1280
Map Type: Satellite
Zoom Level: Slider at halfway point
Tiles Display: 3 x 3

The more tiles you display the more memory it uses. When you get to the point of it showing nothing but the blue circles, it is time to save and exit and probably reboot your system as on my system this means RW is getting ready to crash because of no free memory even though plenty is cached.
