Missing routes

Unread postby stresstool » Sat May 23, 2015 1:57 pm

Recently (I'm not certain when) quite a number of my routes disappeared. It could have happened when I purchased Epic Journeys a couple of days ago. And maybe because I had already owned and had installed the London-Favershem route that came again with Epic Journeys something broke? Has anyone else tripped over this and if so, what was done to correct it? Any help would be appreciated. I have sent a message to RW support, but I really don't expect much help from them.

Here's all I've done so far:

Deleted the entire steamapps/common/Railworks directory and let Steam re-download the entire 23GB. It didn't help. (Technically, I moved it to an external drive).
I unsubscribed from all the workshop scenarios and routes I had. It didn't help.
I did another verify cache (which replaced 1340 files; where did they go from the 23GB downloaded just hours earlier?). It didn't help.

Enclosed is the output of NameMyRoute made just after that 23GB re-install.

Here is the list of routes that I have purchased over the years that no longer show up in any of the RW menus. And when I say any, I mean no career, standard or freeroam scenario nor editor menus. I pretty certain I was running something on the Pacific Surfliner just a few days ago, so whatever happened must have done so recently.

Use the search bar. Some don't show up for me but when I search for them they do.

Thanks for the tip, but it's still a no go. Search doesn't find any of them either.

I have never had that problem and have most of the routes in your list. Another thing you could try is go to the Steam Library page and scroll down the list of your DLC which have ticked boxes beside them and see if they appear there. If they do untick one then tick it again which should theoretically uninstall it then install it again. If that works try it on the other routes.

Thanks but that doesn't work either. Here's what else I've tried:

I unticked all those boxes on the DLC page including Soldier Summit. After it reported all my DLC uninstalled, I opened RW and it correctly shows no routes (DRIVE page is completely blank). The Profile show blank pages for Locos, Routes, Scenarios and Marketplace, as expected. I unticked Soldier Summit on the DLC page and it downloaded it again. Opened RW and no change. All pages remained blank as before.

I have a second Windows 7 machine with Steam loaded. I started it and saw Steam had downloaded all my new DLC so I started RW and, indeed, Soldier Summit as well as all the missing DLC is there and playable. So I shutdown Steam on both machines and deleted the Railworks directory on my troubled machine and copied the Railworks directory from the good machine to the troubled one. Now one would think they both have identical file sets. RW on the troubled machine still shows no Soldier Summit or any of the other previously reported missing routes.

I used the Windows Control panel and used the Uninstall option to delete the Railworks kit. It brought up a Steam dialog asking if I wanted to delete all of Railworks. I said yes. Once that was done, I did a complete Railworks install again. It didn't help.

Clearly there is a file somewhere that has some bogus information that doesn't get deleted with a de-install and/or refuses to clear. Registry perhaps?

I used RW_Tools to unpack the Soldier Summit .ap file which it does without difficulty. Why won't RW see it? I am going to repeat this process using various different orders until I get some different results. Am I insane? Probably. If not now, I will be certainly by the time I've given up.

I am looking for a command line option to maybe have it record what it can find and not find during startup. Maybe there is something in there that says it can't open a file for some reason and says what that file is and what the reason is?

Try starting RW with Logmate (search forums for how to do this).
Maybe the log will contain a clue.

FYI. Still no news from tech support. The ticket remains open.

However on my own I discovered the reason all the stuff disappeared. It seems the copy of Railworks on my one Windows machine can no longer read and/or parse .ap files. So any asset, scenario or route that exists solely in an ap file does not show in any Railworks menu. This even after I un-installed the Steam client and deleted the entire contents of the Steam folder including all my other Steam games, then re-installed the Steam client and had it re-install Railworks, the whole 24GB of it. After having RW_Tools unpack every ap file found in the Railworks folder, all the assets, scenarios and routes once again show up in the menus.

So it is still broken, but at least I can continue to use it. I just have to remember to unpack ap files if Steam should take it upon itself to update something and zap the unpacked files in the process. Maybe there is something leftover in the registry that tells RW not to handle ap files? Where might that be?

I've never seen that behavior before.
Just on a hunch, I'd reinstall the .Net framework from Railworks/Install.
