Possible help to someone with 2014 problems

Unread postby artimrj » Sun Sep 29, 2013 11:03 am

I had some weird things going on so I decided to get a fresh install. I copied and deleted the Railworks folder and did a cache verify and within seconds it said my game was ok??!! I just deleted it! So doing some exploring I found a folder called "downloading" in the SteamApps folder. In there was a copy of RW? So I assumed it was verifying this? Anyway I deleted it and emptied the downloading folder as there were some other things in there I have no idea what and on a re-verify, it now pulled it from the server. Running this new copy of TS2014 I had no Engine-Driver or Community or Workshop functions and the Store button was also greyed out. I did another verify and it pulled 418 more files down! Went back in and still no connections to engine driver and the others. I turned on Steam in game overlay and did another verify, got 200 + files this time. Still no communications. So I went to the Workshop from Steam, and subscribed to a scenario from there. It downloaded. I loaded up TS again and everything was working.

I don't know if any of this will help any one, but it fixed my quirks.

Addendum: I also discovered there was no TEMP or SOURCE folder under Railworks. Creating the Temp folder made the engine pictures show up in the Workshop.

Bob, those Temp and Source folders get created on the fly when you start Railworks and get deleted with you exit it?
Does that mean you have to run Railworks with certain account settings or file permissions?
I have never bothered about this, my Windows 7 user account is super user, not system admin.

No they don't get deleted. There is nothing in my source folder and it is still there and the Temp folder has some screenshots from Workshop scenarios. I had to create them is all I said.

Downloading is a temporary folder for Steam when it is, well, downloading. If you pause a download, you will find files there. It should be emptied after a successful download. Finding RW files there means there was a problem with your download.

Railworks\Temp is the same but for Railworks. Except RW doesn't clear it automatically. You should find everything you got from the Workshop, including those you can't run because you are missing some DLC. That's useful because you can copy them manually, then swap items with RW-Tools. I don't know why RW uses it for scenario images.

Source is notcreated by RW. You create it when you want to make assets.

User account settings and file permissions can be quite confusing to new users. Hence my asking. Perhaps a troubleshooting FAQ or sticky is in order?

I deleted that Temp folder and it didn't get create when I downloaded Hertbob's and NothernWarrior's routes from the Workshop.

I think it is best to let Railworks do its own housekeeping in the root folder unless authorative sources or documents tell otherwise.

Developers' folders, route and asset folder are different. Here some valuable help, do's and don'ts certainly won't go amiss as to keep them clean and lean.

I tried everything and Steam kept telling me everything was OK. The when I tried calling my railworks folder .old it would not D/L and new one even after I deleted the app cache and rebooted. D/L the asset folder now. Only three to five hours to go. Been at it since one. This sucks.

I just want to add that I frequently see messages here advising rerunning cache verifies until one produces a 0 defective files report. I've had to resort to a cache verify on numerous occasions and have, occasionally, run a second verification just to see what would happen. Every time I've done so, the 2nd verification has reported 0 files, so either I'm just lucky or ... what? By the way, when in the U.S. I use the Atlanta Steam server, which is the closest to me in Middle Tennessee.

I'll second the idea of a specific, sticky troubleshooting thread on the condition that any and all trolling or dissing messages be deleted immediately by an administrator.
