Not really a problem or a peculiarity - Smokebox 2-8-0

Ok, pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I'm just hoping there's an easy fix. *!embar*!

Its about...framerates. With my Toshiba Qosmio laptop (a couple years old), I can run pretty much any loco on any route with TSX on and High settings, and get 24-35 fps, no problem. In very dense yards, it drops into the 18-20 range, which is still useable, but not great. However, I've been using non-TSX mode with the Consolidation, which is really tough (dare I say...impossible?) because the cab is so dark with TSX, its pitch black without, even with the brightness cranked up.

In the extended scenario, I was getting 18 fps when it started with TSX on, but soon after leaving the initial position and entering the yard, frame rates dropped into the single digits. Which is clearly not useable. So I tried every combination of turning things off in the graphics settings, eventually finding that turning TSX off instantly gave me 40 fps. So there's something about just this loco, combined with TSX, combined with my laptop that makes for a bad situation.

Pretty sure its the fact that its so beautifully detailed and geometrically complex, and the Train Sim gods dont want me to experience it in all its glory on my old laptop. So...is there anything I can try to reduce its impact, or is this just a poignant hint that it may be time to start the long process of saving up for a new machine yet again?

A couple of things. I assume you have the two cab lights turned on? It looks like it in your screenshot but I'm not sure.
Are you turning up the brightness on your monitor or in RW settings? I have to crank mine up too.

Also, you can reduce the detail level while in the game by pressing Cntl Shift 1. You can also toggle cab shadows with Cntl Shift S. This should help your frame rate. There are more details in manual.

Good luck!

I was turning off the cab shadows, but I didnt know about reducing the detail level, thanks! This helped a little, too. I think I figured out that being near the yard lights (of all things) in the Consolidation is what kills the framerate. Not the loco itself, or being near other freight cars/trains. So something about the HSC yard lights in combination with the loco is what the culprit was.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help!

:D That's exactly what I was going to say. It's not the loco, it's those yard lamps in Woodvale yard. I found that when you get there, if you simply look over to the other side of the river, away from the lamps, the fps rocket up again. I think it has something to do with the way they did the light emitters for the lamps. It's kind of a pity that I chose to do a scenario there *!lol!*

Anyway, as said above, I incorporated ways to deal with fps, ctrl-shift-1 suppresses a lot of nuts, bolts and rivets in the exterior view (leaving just the image of the rivets on the flat texture), and ctrl-shift-S turns off the shadows cast by the cab light and gauge light. On my system, doing that can give you back between 5 and 8 fps.

Something else I always recommend is to check the graphics card settings. I played around a lot with my NVidia Control Panel settings until I hit on the perfect combination. I now get over 80fps, or locked on 29-30 if I turn on adaptive half-refresh rate vertical synch.

Cheers!

Please share your NVidia settings ... I've never really understood how to handle those. My computer already handles Train Simulator pretty well, but better performance is always ... uh, ... better, right?

The main thing is to set the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering to application-controlled, make sure the display is set for a single monitor (not multi) and then fiddle with the other settings. I tried messing with AA and AF in the NVidia Control Panel, but it just interfered with the in-game settings and was worse.

I usually run with Vsync on adaptive half refresh, because I really hate screen tearing, especially when panning around in the cab. Adaptive means that it automatically turns off Vsync if it can't otherwise maintain the fps at half the refresh rate of the monitor - the rest of the time, Vsync is on and the fps are locked at half the refresh rate (29-30 fps, because I've got a 59Hz monitor). On my system, the only time it ever turns off Vsync (temporarily) is when a train is coming towards me with its lights on, or going through Woodvale yard on the HSC (because of those derned lamps).
