Self-editing terrain?

Unread postby MadMike1024 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 8:33 pm

As I was working on the HRRR I decided to run the locomotive up the line a ways to see if I had some track oddities resolved. Imagine my shock to come around the bend at the 1 1/2 mile mark and find a cliff in the track!

It appears that a single terrain tile decide it need to be 100 feet higher than it's cousins. Does anyone know why it does that? I had my first mapping project ruined when a large chunk of the hand created terrain just went to 0 altitude.

Secondly, is it possible to replace a single tile in the terrain folder? I have a situation that would be easily resolved if it can be, otherwise I'm in for a bit of work.

TIA, MM

I don't know why it would have jumped UP 100 feet, but I bet the tile that went to zero was because you hit the T key one time without knowing it while you were over that tile. That has happened to many of us. If you have backups, you can replace that tile file; it will work fine. If you don't, you will have to temporarily create a new route from the same template you used previously and reload your terrain into that route. That will create a new tile for you to replace the bad one in your production version.

Speaking of backups, Mike has just put a cool new tool in RWTools for us. It is a superfast way to backup just your route to any location using the Clone Route button in the Check Routes panel. I now keep RWT running all the time I am working and pop over to it to do a backup directly to my flash drive after every sizable quantity of work (a few times in 6-8 hours). Giving each backup a new name (time&description) and keeping 5-6 backups gives me a choice of versions to revert to in case I discover problems hours after I did something. Try it out.

TGFBU - Thank goodness for backups! I had a two day old route file on my backup drive so I just copied the Terrain file over and it fixed it right up. One minor touchup and it's fine.

I'll have to see about the RW_Tools© clone tool, it may be easier. What I'm doing now is copying the route files (the gibberish named ones) onto a USB Hard drive every two days or so. I'll delete ones over 30 days old.

I think backups go against human nature... !*don-know!* ... or something. I was a professional in IT for 10 years and we all droned on about it for hours and then would forget to put the tape in that night. !**duh*!!

My solution has always been to find the absolute very easiest mindless way to do it and then maybe I'll remember to use it more often. This takes about 15 seconds per backup; that includes typing in the name.
