I new thing called: Invisible repaint

Unread postby 5292nate » Tue Mar 12, 2013 4:57 pm

Okay. Most could probably detect the sarcasm in my title. I am trying to repaint an engine, and am having a problem. (So what else is new?) When I go to the scenario editor to place the engine on the tracks, there's nothing there. It shows up in the asset list, but when I hover over the tracks to place it, there is nothing there. All the other repaints of the dash 9 show up, but not mine. I checked the bin file, but didn't see anything. Then again, I'm very new to this and could easily have missed something. Any wise advice? I cloned it in RW tools. Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Is the geo file in your new folder? Did you edit the engine's BIN file to reference the new folder name?

The geo file is there. Does the geo file need to be the same name as the bin, or vise versa? Also, tell me how to properly edit the bin to reference the new folder.

Do you know how to make a xml to edit the bin file? The Geo is probably fine. The bin file is the path to see your stuff.

Yes. I just don't know what to do after that.

After you change the xml you need to run it through the serz so it changes the bin file. Check the time to see if it's done and then you you should have the go to for your loco.

I suggest you open the xml file with word pad, do the edit and replace and carefully go through to make sure you have your new named loco in every place it's supposed to be. It's really easy to miss a place or two leading to this kind of situation.

Whatever you call you new loco for instance as a example say UP_dirty and the one you are replacing is say SoPac you need to start at the top and open the replace window. Put in SoPac in the top slot there and UP_dirty in the bottom one. Just keep doing next until it can't find any more and save it. You can say replace all but I like to do them one at a time in case there is some place that you don't want it to change.

Two things. 1.Make a copy before you start and save it so if the thing gets really fouled up you can always put it back in.
2. Don't forget to serz it back to the bin file. I do that all the time. You can see if it's done because the time on the file will change.

Good luck.

Why not just use RW Tools to do the serzing and editting with? I have RW Tools associated with BIN files and all I have to do is double click one and RW Tools opens it right up. I edit and save. No muss no fuss.

A buddy of mine fixed it... He is going to tell me what went wrong. Apparently, it's complicated! (Thanks again Kevin!)

That, and also if you want to use a better editor (such as Ultra-edit for XML syntax hightlighting), you just copy the whole file from the RW-Tools screen and back. That's just Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-V, edit the file, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-S.
Easy!

I have had a fair number of unintended consequences with Rwtools. Maybe I should try the new version again and see how it does.

I guess I have been lucky then as I have had no problems with RW Tools and everything I paint is done using it. Editting bin files and textures, all goes through the tools.
