Cock-eyed decals

Unread postby 5292nate » Sun Jan 06, 2013 3:38 pm

Hey guys. I have a problem. I was told to consider, building my own fictional route, to gain some practice. I decided instead, to build a short easy prototype route, because I want some practice with terrain files and decaling. So here's the problem. I put my decals in the route and lined them up with the center of my decal markers. Now, they are all crooked. Take a look at the 2 screenshots.

Thanks

Nathan

There is a option so set up RW_Decal to auto-rotate when creating them, but I just rotate them when I place them. My markers indicate the center of each decal, and there is one marker per 4 decals indicating the corner, so I place the decal centered on it's marker, then rotate until the corner meets the additional marker. I can't remember how I created them exactly because it's been months. Tell you what, you're doing well to have figured out what you have so soon. Keep at it !!*ok*!!

Thanks, for the encouragement! I think I'll opt for the auto-rotation.

Now they're oriented right, but they are still off center. My decal settings are as shown in the screenshot.

I tick the lock chunks to same rotation box and use corner markers only. That should line them up fine. Once you get the hang of it you can lay lots of decals in no time at all.
I tend to just lay a handful down on the area I'm working at a time although some folk will lay miles of them. I found if I put too many down at once loading times were affected.

Me too. Also in some areas if I had more than say 20 decals placed at a time I would get lock ups.

Yeah. Another guy was saying that when he puts more than 10 miles of decals in, it crashes the game. I'll try the locking optioin.

Tried the suggestions. Still crooked, or off center. Tried corners and centers. Hate using corner markers. MUCH prefer using center markers. Still not right. The only thing I can think of, is that somehow, the cursor is no longer in the exact center of the decal. How do I fix this?

I have over a few hundred decals laid and no lock up problems.

You appear to have UTM correction enabled. What this does is compensate for the discrepancy between the flat surface of the Railworks "world" and the curvature of the Earth. Therefore aligning each decal to its own marker will mean that they do not align exactly to each other.

I find it best to line up one decal precisely to its markers and then use this decal as a point of reference to line up the remaining decals to. You'll likely find that the further from the "base" decal you get, the greater the discrepancy between the decal edges and the marker positions, but your decals will match up more exactly to each other.

I tried taking UTM corrector off. Didn't work. And Yes. I'm running Google earth 6.1

That explains alot. I'm using 1/3 terrain and it's extremely hilly. I just do what you do and it all works out.

Something is definetly wrong with RW decal. When I started, the decals were only 2 or 3 feet at astray from eachother before I lined them up. Now they are about 2 or 3 hundred feet apart, when I line them up.

Yeah they're definately being produced wrong. Even with bad orientation etc... you should be able to rotate the decals to achieve perfect coverage.
