Problem with Asset Block Tool in Editor

Unread postby madoke » Tue Sep 04, 2012 1:16 am

Within the last few days I discovered that I cannot get the asset block tool to show its right hand flyout to add the asset. I have been using this tool for many many months with no problem, so this is a new thing. Last time I used the tool, before finding this problem, was about a month ago. I am guessing that one of the unlisted updates came through from Steam and this was affected, but again, just guessing. I have not added any new routes, so the basic system is stable and has remained at that level for at least 6 months. The only asset I have added is that new UP GE Switcher DLC, which is used in the route. A rolling stock addon should not affect editor performance. I have now done 3 checks for damaged files using the steam integrity check, but each time it tells me that everything is OK. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the problem or suggestions for trouble shooting or fixing? Has anyone else ever had this problem? Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I used the asset block tool a lot on my old route and it did eventually start playing up and giving me SBHH failures whenever I tried to use it.
I did have the problem you describe but unfortunatly my only solution was to stop using it. As I was only using it for thick forrest I started copying and pasting the blocks I'd already created.
Sorry this isn't much help but at least your not alone with the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one with the problem. Did you, by any chance, report this to RSC? If not I will (not that I expect any action in the near future). I do not understand what would have caused this to occur, since I have primarily doing route building for the last 6 months. Very few additions, only auto-updates, rarely run trains, except to test my own route. My route is limited to default assets plus DLC route assets. Nothing else. Thanks again.

I've also experienced problems with this tool.

I found I can improve the behaviour by using the object filter to disable assets from certain developers. Try eliminating your 'addons' a few at a time and you may find one that is triggering the issue.

I didn't report it as I was new to route building at the time and assumed I was doing something wrong, looks like I was wrong :D
Looking back I think my problem was caused by placing to many items in the block and my not overly powerful computer just couldn't render everything and threw up a SBHH. I was covering mountains with trees.

I just tested the asset block tool and had absolutely no troubles with it.

I just went through all of my asset developer assignments (blue cube, right flyout) and removed and re-added every developer, testing the asset block in between, and none of these had any effect. Again, I am only using 3DTrains and Various official DLC developers, and these have been pretty stable (for the better or worse), so I don't suspect that they would be the culprit anyway...There are "quiet" updates coming in from Steam on a fairly frequent rate lately, based on date checking of files, so that is where I am thinking the problem solving may lead to. If I am not making any changes or additions, then that leaves only RS.com unless someone comes up with something else.

@bgboyski, yes that will cause crashes, and memory is the answer to that one. There are still limitations, but the limit goes higher with more memory. Saving every few minutes will solve most of that kind of problem since this clears your memory leaving room for another new load of trees. This problem is only related to the disappearance of the right hand flyout. Without that I can't select any trees for the asset block, so memory is not an issue. I have 16 GB, anyway, so I'm not worried.

I have now done 3 integrity checks through Steam, with no problems found, so I am totally up the creek without a paddle here. As a long term route builder, from early RS to the present, I thought I had seen every possible glitch, but this is really a new one. I think as a last resort I might do a brute force reload by erasing the program from my Hard Drive (saving my routes), and have Steam actually reload the sim rather than just checking it. We'll see what happens.
