what i do is use the grade part of the tracklaying tool, i start off at 0%, go for a few meters, make it .5% again for a few meters, then 1%, then 1.5%, then 2% and so on, this gives a really smooth effect and theres alot less hassle because you dont even knotice the change of .5% each time untill you go a little ways then it looks natural like it should. (on the bottom left flyout is where you put in your ammount)

"thecanadianrail"/Gerret is right. However, I would rather use steps of 0.2% - 0.3% grade, than of 0.5%.

"mdurdan", all you need is to start the line at a grade of 0.0% and then lay down some feet/meters of track and then change the grade value in the flyout in the down left corner of your screen to 0.3%. Always add another 0.3% of value to the existing one after some feet of track. The line will get steeper and steeper. Rember that values above 4.0% are unrealistic.

The game typically uses the metric system and railroad grades are in % in the US (it is different in Britain).
You will find that the bar at the bottom of your screen will tell you the length of a piece of track and its grade value if you hover your mouse over it. This only works in the track editor mode of the world editor.

If you use the gradient tool instead of changing gradients as you lay the track, you can place points outside the first one, then delete the middle. Repeat until you have a smooth transition.

I really need to refine the transitions on my route. It runs like a line that hasn't been tamped in 20 years. A few areas are kinda nice, almost like an occasional soft spot or kink, but my line goes a bit to the extreme lol.
