Google Earth and Railworks

Discussion about RailWorks route design.

I'm still trying to figure out how to create markers in Google Earth. Been at it all day. There is a "Line features" option in which someone has already done the whole line but I've got no idea how to export it.

Funny thing... I wasn't even using Google Earth. I didn't realise you have to download the programme itself to use the features. My bad.

Also, the markers don't need to be terribly accurate for ReDem, it merely uses them as a guide to find what coordinates to get its data from. You then specify how many tiles away from the route you want rendered and the software does the rest.

My ReDem marker files tend to be a mess because I just plop down a bunch of points (500m apart or less) roughly along the route. Really it's just estimated placement, takes 5 minutes.

It's alot of effort just for some terrain. Unfortunately, ReDem only accpets .bil and I can't find any. Back to the drawing board.

Try this. I know its for RWDecal, but it does describe how to get the route path out of Google Earth.

Well that's a good start. Thank you very much for the referal. Got my whole route decals made. Not sure how to position the first one so it's in the right place but I'll work it out. Now just to get the terrain sorted and I'll be ready to rock'n'roll! Cheers Paps.

Make sure you watch the other tutorials as well. They all give some nice hints as to how to get things done. Also RSC has a set of tutorials up on YouTube. They don't address the issues you are working on now, but they are very helpful when you start laying track and working on terrain.

You can download BIL files from the USGS seamless server. There is a good tutorial how to do this at the ReDem website.

Ok so I got my markers for ReDem no problems. When I load the DEM data which is 1/3 arc from Earth Explorer (USGS) it say the co-ordinates are WAY off the button ie. Top Lat is 12960 and Left Long is -295200 ! That's not even on this planet.

At this point the only suggestion I have based on my own experiences is this:

http://www.zugware.com/documents/redem_manual/

When I have imported DEM data into RW3 I follow the steps from that website exactly. The only time I've had errors was my own fault (operator error)

It worked! I can't see the tiles I'm downloading from USGS in the seamless viewer (some sort of graphics issue) but I got them none-the-less and they're fairly detailed. There's definately evidence of track cuttings etc so combining with RW Decals I'll have no problems laying track. Just waiting for my activation from ReDem to arrive so I have whole tiles! Cheers Barnez.

:D :D :D

Excellent.

Oh, one other thing, FYI - don't forget to clear the blueprint cache when starting up RW3 - especially after a change to the files like adding markers or importing decals from RW_decal, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've loaded in named markers for mileposts and not cleared the cache, and then sat staring at the screen wondering where my markers were.

Now the big question... Is it better to lay decals then import DEM or the other way around?

I import DEM first, then lay the decals. Don't know for sure if one way is better than the other, it just make more sense to me. *!!wink!!*
