Your tutorial is very helpful,I have been working on my prototype route for over a week now. But I saw a reference somewhere that the highest resolution data (1/9 arc second) processed through that convertor will lose resolution. I may have misunderstood what I saw,so I would like a clarification. Since you can only choose 1 or 3 second output,is 1 arc second the best that can be generated?

Nice to hear the tutorial is helpful. You are correct, the best terrain ( where available ) is 1/9 arc second, / too bad the 1/9 does not cover more of the US... Yes, 1 arc output is the best option to go for.

In regards to your question, i did not know the program actually degrades the terrain data when processed, hm..... I was under the impression that the program "converted" the data only.

Can anyone else clarify / confirm thìs ?

It looks like the converter will degrade the quality as the highest option is 1 arc second.
So even if you have a 1/3 or 1/9 arc second data, it looks like the best it can do is 1 arc second.

I think this is the case as .hgt or .bil DEM's can only hold their coordinates and geo reference data if compiled at 3 or 1 arc sec.

I've been trying to make use of some 15metres/second data, but if I try to compile (using another GIS programs) to .3333333 arc seconds, when I try to open it again into the GIS program to check it's worked, it asks me "where" the DEM should go (it losses it's geo info)

To have a DEM any higher resolution than 1 arc second would mean having another file in which the geo info is kept. This is how other GIS programs would work, but I don't think Railworks looks for those other files e.g. a blw file which can be created when exporting to a .bil file (a bil file is the same as a hgt file, you just have to rename it).

So, it would seem the highest resolution terrain data Railworks can import would be 1 arc second, or about 30metres/second. Which is a shame.
I have some 1 metre/second data as well which would still look great at 1/9 arc second. Oh well :(

So it seems that you do have to use ReDem to get high resolution ground into RW. I was excited,as the convertor is very straight-forward to use. The height file generated is 10 times larger than just a straight one arc second file, when inputting 1/9 data. So I thought that it was higher resolution....... Has anyone generated terrain with this program, and Redem both as a comparison?

This sounds like just the tutorial I need. Unfortunately I can't seem to locate it for download. Is it still available? Is there a link to the PDF.

Erik.
