Need help converting 1 arc second terrain data.

Unread postby Brickrail782 » Wed Mar 19, 2025 2:11 pm

I'm looking to download terrain data for a route I'm working on, but I'm having issues with converting the data for use in game. I'm downloading the data in .TIF format from here (https://apps.nationalmap.gov/downloader/), and was attempting to convert it according to this tutorial (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17791).

I had previously documented my problems with conversion in the RWA thread (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23898&p=270219&hilit=terrain#p270219), but it ultimately didn't go anywhere. I would be grateful for any help with this matter.

PROBLEM RESOLVED.

"Oystein" on the Dovetail Forums pointed me in the direction of Viewfinder Panoramas (https://viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html), which contains 1" terrain data that can be read out-of-the-box by TSC.

I'm really glad you found this. Once I get the steel mill route I've been working on finished, I wanted to make a route of the PRR elevated line through Cleveland down to the Huletts, but I didn't want to start until I could get 1 arc second data into the game.

Sounds interesting! What steel mill are you working on?

It's a reworking of the Industrial Interactive Route into a steel mill. I've posted about it, getting very close to being done finally.

I was wondering how you were getting on, looking forward to it and running those IHB locos Buzz did.

It's coming along slowly but surely John! I want it to be immersive so I've been "sweating the small stuff" like spending hours going through clutter assets to craft the soaking pits for ingots in the slab mill. All the big stuff is pretty much done otherwise. I appreciate that you're still interested in it!

It's the small stuff that a) makes the difference and b0 takes seemingly forever, there always seems to be a "place just another here" moment.
