Graphics card setting help.

Unread postby Importz2k1 » Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:29 pm

Hello everyone, once again I come to you for help. I have been a console player all my life and am just learning the basics of pc games and files.
I am creating a route and when I run it, my train looks like it's skipping a little ( slow down/ speed up). It does not matter if I am running a single locomotive or a long consist. I've tried looking in forums, google, and anywhere I could find to see if I have the graphics card settings adjusted correctly but have been unsucessful. I used Novabench to get some rusults on my system:

NovaBench Score: 505
8/25/2011 9:55:57 PM
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD Athlon 5200 DualCore @ 2300 MHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series

4096 MB System RAM (Score: 109)
- RAM Speed: 2956 MB/s

CPU Tests (Score: 178)
- Floating Point Operations/Second: 46431324
- Integer Operations/Second: 125437988
- MD5 Hashes Generated/Second: 468858

Graphics Tests (Score: 183)
- 3D Frames Per Second: 546

Hardware Tests (Score: 35)
- Primary Partition Capacity: 466 GB
- Drive Write Speed: 86 MB/s

Now as far as the settings for the graphics card, I have the follwing:

Smoothvision HD Anti Aliasing : 8X
Smoothvision HD Anisotropic filtering: 16X
Tessellation : AMD optimized instead of application settings
Texture filtering quality: High quality
Mipmap Detail Level: High quality instead of performance
Wait for vertical refresh: High quality instead of performance
Anti Aliasing mode: Performance instead of quality
Open GL settings: check mark in tripple buffering

The next set gave me a warning not to change:
High performance GPU clock settings: 850MHz
High performance Memory Clock Settings: 1200MHz
Manual Fan Control: set to 50%

Thanks,
Jay

Back in the days when I had a dual core Athlon, Need for Speed Most Wanted would speed up and slow down, that CPU needed a dual core driver from AMD's website. Win 7 is supposed to have that driver built in, tho. What processes are running in the background, if any? That CPU is a little on the low side for this sim, too. Maybe RW3, with multi core support, will help.

Has anyone seen a guide to setting up an ATI Radeon card?

After reading your post I decided to do a little homework, I went up on Tiger Direct and discovered that my cpu was the cheapest at the bottom of the list.
It's an AMD Athlon X2 5200+ AD5200OCK22GM Processor - Dual-Core, 1MB L2 Cache, 2.30GHz, Socket AM3, OEM for 40 bucks.
I watched a video on how to install a new cpu and it's very easy, so here's my next question, I've always believed that you get what you pay for, so here I'm looking at the most expensive one that will fit my motherboard :
AMD HDE00ZFBGRBOX Phenom II 1100T Black Edition Six Core Processor - 3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s) FSB, Retail, Socket AM3, Processor with Fan for 190 bucks.
Would this be a smart buy? Will I have to upgrade anything else on my pc to handle this?
I have the ECS MCP61_M3 NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE AM3 mATX Motherboard.
I know I can call Tiger Direct and they can tell me what is compatible, but I am always affraid of people trying to sell me stuff that I don't need, so any help that anyone can provide me with this would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need a hex for gaming, since the vast majority of games aren't even multithreaded, and if they are, generally won't use more than 4 cores.

The best AMD for gaming right now is the Phenom x4 980BE, $20 cheaper, 400MHz higher clock speed, everything else is the same.

If you want/know how to overclock you can get a 955BE and save some money and get pretty much the same results. However, if you upgrade your processor to one of these, your RAM may be a bottleneck, and your gpu likely will be. How much RAM and what speed is it?

You may also need a stronger PSU.

Wow, didn't realize they made an Athlon dual for AM3. Mine was years ago, Socket 754.

My Phenom II 940 runs really nice, got it cheap from New Egg. I had a bad time with Tiger Direct once, I'll never buy from them again.

DDR3 1066 should be ok, but that 6700 is a bit low. The 67xx series is AMD's new low-end solution. Depending on what you want to spend, you can get a 68xx, AMD's medium/medium high range, or a NVIDIA 550/560 for under $200.

As for the socket, Athlon, like Pentium, is merely a name that AMD applies to their processors. There have been a number of distinct architectures to bear the Athlon name.

Another thing, if you know how to overclock, then going with a 1090T would be better as you could simply overclock it to 1100T, or higher levels. You could save $10. Also, that motherboard can only support a CPU wattage (TDP(Thermal Design Power)) of 95w. That motherboard can only handle a 1065T, with latest BIOS update. You would need a Motherboard upgrade to run the 1090T or 1100T. If you are willing to spend a bit extra, then I would suggest a Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H Motherboard to support the AMD 1090T or 1100T.
They exist everywhere. You may not see them, but they're there. Awww yeeeaaaahhhh, 20% Cooler! /)

Ok, so I purchased the Phenom II X4 980 3.70 GHz Processor - Socket AM3 PGA-938 today, and have my eye on a XFX ATI Radeon HD6950 2 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/2x Mini-Displayport PCI-Express Video Card HD695XCDFC (or something along that price range)for a future purchase. So will I be fine now? Or are we talking a new motherboard too? I can only do a few things at a time as I have a limited budget. You guy's are great, thanks for all the advise because it is definately needed. I have limited computer knowledge but am learning rather quickly thanks to you guy's.

That CPU is 125 watts. As Simer4 says, your board will only support 95 watts. I see a problem there. *!!wink!!*

Just looking to help, yes, you should be good now. The video card, RAM, hard drives will all be fine. Wait until RW3 and see what it brings to the table. !!*ok*!!
