ADDING ENVIROMENTS FROM ANOTHER ROUTE

Unread postby GogebicChief » Thu May 26, 2022 10:02 pm

Good Day:
I am taking a dive into making a route, and I am wondering if there is a way I can take the environment files from one route and add it to the one You are making. I am making the route based on the RWA Lakeside Route. I would like to use one of the ground covers, that are painted on from German ICE Route, to use as a riverbed. I am hoping some can tell me if it can be done. I thought that if I checked off the Assets box in the Route Editor, they would show up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Stefan

Hello,
I'm speaking as self taught and still a novice at this myself having been creating a route from scratch for a couple years. There are many others here who may speak up and speak more definitively about your question.

My experience has been that if I tick the particular providers assets in the list, they then appear in the route editor in the master list and then in each sub category as would apply i.e. buildings, scenery, track, whatever. Sometimes the nomenclature is very different between providers as to what an asset is named. This assumes you have the asset downloaded from the provider too.

In your particular case some additional info might help.

You mentioned "based on RWA Lakeside Route" ..... Are you "cloning" the RWA route or using its track rule and ground textures as your basis for your route?

Are you creating a route from scratch and importing the terrain DEMX files for some part of the world for it or are you modeling a specific place?

You mentioned "ground covers" painted on...... are your referring to a color or texture that is applied with the paint tool in the route editor or are you referring to a specific tree, bush, grass, or rock in reference to the river you like in the ICE route?

For clarity, so I don't tell you a bunch of stuff you already know, is this your first stab at creating a route? How familiar are you with the route editor tools?

Happy to help,

tnttrainer:
Thanks for Your quick reply. Yes I am just using the the Lakeside Route for track rules, & terrain. Also I went DEMEX route. I am trying to create the exact Route the Soo & CNW used to get the Iron Ore from Ironwood Mi / Hurley Wi on the Gogebic Iron Range to the Big Ore Dock in Ashland Wi.. The Soo Route going SW down through Mellen Wi, then up to Ashland. The CNW route going more Westerly from Hurley, up through Saxon & Odanah Wi, and into Ashland.
You are correct, as that I am looking to get to a color or texture that is applied with the paint tool in the route editor. I know that those are in the Environment folder of the Routes. The river rock textures in Lakeside Route are too white, they look almost like Lannon Stone. The river beds in that area are really dark, and kind of "reddish". Hope that I answered Your Questions. Thanks for the Help, Stefan *!!thnx!!*

Generally speaking you can use most anything you want to use however you can't include those assets in your upload that contain things that are payware. You just inform people that the stuff is available required and where to get it. If it is freeware it is polite to include credit to the author. Ticking them off in the asset list allows them to appear in the list on the left.

I'm afraid I am speculating here but, I suspect when you choose the route that you want the "textures" from, when setting up the route, that you get those textures only. I will have to let someone else speak as to whether you can "cherry pick" a texture from another route and add/combine into another. I doubt that they "import" when you add the physical assets from a route to the list.

Good luck with your efforts.

I would be a little careful about using a route that few are liable to have if you want the most people to enjoy it when you finish. Are you having any trouble finding the stuff you are looking for?

Buzz & tnttrainer: Thanks for the input. As far as the route I was looking at the "painted" covering at is the "Mannheim to Karlsruhe" that came when I bought TS2019 package. So I think many will have it. But It will be long time away before I think I will be to the point I were it might even think about downloading for others to use it. Father Time & health issues may get me before I get done. Just a thought. Can I use the " Mannheim to Karlsruhe" as the ground texture base for the route, and lay all the track with the "Lakeside" Track Assets & Rules? It is only 2 Rivers - the Montreal (Wisc./Mich. Border) & the Potato River. Of course there is plenty of Cedar Swamps. !*roll-laugh*! Thanks, Stefan

Good luck with your efforts.

You can mix and match any ground textures you want, but it requires you to create a custom terrain.bin file in a new Provider/Product/Environment folder, and then to have the route reference this file instead of the default. To ensure that all ground texture names from the original route stay the same, I'd recommend just duplicating the route's default and then adding new entries to it once it's been moved to your custom folder.
