UPDATE: This is where I've been looking for that E-L base model 40ft 10-6 Boxcar...

And I just noticed that it's also hiding within the giant block of 40ft 10-6 boxcars from Harry that are based on it.

Well then. That was agonizing. !*hp*! However, the 40ft 10-6 boxcar repaints from Harry still don't work. Now with the E-L base model working, I tried the "RW_AssetSetup" on one of the repaints. I reopened Train Sim and tried to place a Soo Line boxcar...no luck. Same old thing: I can hear it but can't see it. Here's what's inside that folder...

I know Buzz asked this question but I'm not certain I saw you answer it. I had a similar problem "hear it but not see it" with one of my other assets and it was because I did not have all the boxes ticked in the right hand fly out for assets. Not only Harry's items but also Mainlines. I have made the mistake of not ticking all the boxes each time I make a new scenario and then I can't find a particular asset. My novice two cents worth!

Once again, THIS IS NOT WHAT THE FILE FOR THIS SHOULD LOOK LIKE. What is all that glop you have in there? This is the downloaded folder not the folder for the CAR. Look in that folder named RailWorks. In there is the SOO folder you need. Do you need another tutorial about the path to these items?

I think we should start over with this topic. One issue I have seen is that the "RW_AssetSetup.exe" installer app is working differently for some reason. Every time I use it, I have to indicate the link to the Railworks folder. However, there is a much easier way to install these models. Using 7zip, extract to the assigned folder. Inside the folder, you will see a "Railworks" folder. Open that folder and copy the "Assets" folder. Go to your "C" drive and dig down to your "C/Steam/steamapps/common/Railworks" folder. Paste the "Assets" folder you just copied there and all should work. Again, you must have already installed the original Mainelines models.

Hope this helps. It works this way for me.

Thank you Harry, that made more sense. Everything is working great.

You guys make amazing stuff and I consider it an art. But I suspect that both of you, and the other creators here as well, are highly proficient with computers - particularly software. What seems obvious to you is because your skillset is like a second language. Buzz, I'm not tone-deaf. One cannot expect everyone else to know what you know. Being proficient in using Train Sim doesn't mean I'm proficient with software, just like being a great driver doesn't mean I'm a mechanic. Who here has seen a mechanic belittle a driver for not knowing how to repair a transmission? Some of this stuff gets very complex very quickly: A lot of these folders have long strings of seemingly redundant folders filled with...just more folders. "Assets" appears twice in some of these paths. Furthermore, each RWA creator seemingly requires a different folder and file structure, or setup, to make the work function properly - let alone downloads from other sites like Searchlight, Golden Age, etc. And they all end up in the same place. This is confusing if one is unfamiliar with how all these files interact with one another. And adding to the confusion is that much of this "glop" works perfectly fine in-game, GreatNortherner's for example. So how would I know that my folder organization is incorrect? That's not rhetorical - I'm actually asking.

We all start learning somewhere.

Buzz456 wrote:Do you need another tutorial about the path to these items?

Quite frankly, I think a great service would be done by RWA to add to the "Tutorials" section a comprehensive lesson on the basics of downloading: Not just the WHAT and the HOW, but also the WHY. As any good teacher will tell you, everyone learns in a slightly different way and the WHY part is crucial to understanding the different downloading methods, what certain files and folders do, how different pieces interact with one another, why some folders only contain pictures, the issue of couplers, etc. Expecting users to know this stuff before bothering with RWA content is simply unrealistic. And to stress the point of how confusing these downloads can get sometimes, I'm only 37. So this isn't akin to some 80-year-old trying to figure out a digital camera. I hope my perspective is helpful.

Thank you for your help and I look forward to your work.

I apologize if I came off as being snarky about this. I know it's all pretty confusing some times. The best way to learn about this is to look at some items that you know work properly for their structure. In the beginning of my trail and tribulations with computers that continue to this day my bride used to stand behind me looking over my shoulder and say it's all about paths. The computer can't do what you want it to do if it can't find the path to the instructions. Learning about and understanding the structure of the game is time consuming and sometimes frustrating. To someone who has been around a while it's frustrating when at times one says "I followed the instructions exactly and it still doesn't work." I have heard that at least a hundred times. I've said it to myself at least that many times only to find out one little thing the darn computer didn't like.
Anyway !!**sorry**!! and I'll try to be more patient going forward.

It's all good, my guy. I'm guilty of having a short temper with brakemen who don't know how to follow instructions (or a certain engineer who kicked so softly that a tank tar actually re-coupled with the locomotive). By the way, do you fellas take requests? I've noticed a significant absence of 40's-50's-era Rock Island boxcars. DL&W and old-style M&StL too but definitely the Rock.

Cheers!
