Noob question on consist creation and use

Unread postby ozinoz » Sat Jan 16, 2021 1:57 am

Have just returned to TS after a year, eagerly waiting on Mike's Big Boy (which is incidental)

In preparation I thought I would do some prep and create some scenarios and consists etc for both Alpenfreight's Sherman Hill 1950's and the Wasatch Grade routes (for example west & east The Overland service using the period timetables and continuing onto the other route (just some hours and miles further on) My question relates to consist building, which is a laborious job if you do it "in scenario". I thought I would try the touted QD method, Creation is quite easy, but I cant them find them to place within the standard scenarios that I am creating, so I am guessing that QD consists are for QD scenarios only?? I cant even seem to find the created blueprint file to see if I could edit & copy it across to the standard consists folder.

Is there a method of creating consists without having to place the rolling stock individually on the track (I never have much luck with this method) Probably very basic, but there you are... **!!bang!!**

*!!thnx!!*

There is a way of saving a premade consist, and having it available to place in a standard or free roam scenario with one click. I have no idea how to do it though. The saved consists go in the 'preload' folder inside the assets folder.

Overshoe did a QD consist builder tutorial over at The Old Hangar once upon a time, maybe it would help. https://mainescenery.proboards.com/thread/13730/building-quick-consists-custom-button

Wow. That was almost 7 years ago. Primitive but still useful I think.

I prefer making consists with TSTools. You can save them where you want and reuse them easily.

There is a 3 part article here: https://mainescenery.proboards.com/board/33/tutorials
Its also 7 years old.

Excellent set of tutorials - will save them and see how I go.

The problem I am experiencing, is using those consists, or fragments, in standard scenarios, not QD. They just dont appear in the list. DTG (et al) have made this way more complicated than it needs to be, particularly with trying to find specific rolling stock. For example, I have about 18 different PFE cars, from various developers, which all show up in the QD consist creator, yet trying to find them within the different developers etc is a nightmare for standard consist creation. I was hoping there was some way where a QD consist could be flagged in other scenerio types without having to reinvent the wheel. Wishful thinking I guess

Thanks.

That is one of the reasons I started building consists with RWTools/TSTools. Those can be saved in an asset's preload folder and that can be activated for a scenario, the same as activating anything else. That doesn't seem to work with consists made with the internal consist editor. With TSTools there are other neat tricks available to use with AI (in QD anyway) as well.
