GP5/7/9 & SD7/9 Brake Physics Update

Unread postby GreatNortherner » Sat Dec 14, 2019 6:38 am

Hi,

I have released a small update for all of my GP and SD engines which changes the brake settings.

You can download it here:
http://golden-age-rails.com/freerw/rail ... on-Fix.zip
This will affect the brakes on all GP and SD engines once installed and should also cover repaints.

In short, it brings the apply and release rate settings and a few other parameters in line with those on comparable DTG locomotives. This eliminates a set of experimentally tweaked brake parameters that were in use before. Somebody (I forgot who) suggested those to me long ago as being more realistic. I have no way to know if that's true and I like the DTG brakes better (and grew tired of the complaints from others about the brakes, LOL).

The update does NOT change the brake valve, it is still a non-self lapping brake on all of these engines so you still have to go to APPLY, hold it it there until the desired brake pressure has been reached, and then put the handle into LAP to hold the pressure. You can control the speed of the brake pipe reduction by how deep into the Apply zone you push the lever (not sure if that's realistic behaviour, it's just how this control type works in RW).

Cheers
Michael

Thanks for the fix, try applying the GP9 physics from the Fan Railer Soldier Summit mod and let me know how it goes.

Thanks, but I'm done with physics mods. No offense to any of you who like to tinker with those (I used to do that too, especially in MSTS), but I just can't tell which is setting "right" and which is "wrong", so I'll stick with default physics. It's safer that way: nobody will experience unexpected operating behaviour when running my locmotives and complain to me about it. *!twisted!*

This is not meant to discourage anyone from tinkering with the physics in these locomotives or upload tweaks of your own if you so wish. I'm just saying that I won't be doing it myself.

Cheers!

Michael you are touching one of my pet peeves with TS.
I have a huge inventory of engines and they all handle differently.
It seems to me that engines with similar brake valves should handle the same. A 26L is a 26L, a 24RL is a 24RL.
If someone was able to produce realistic blueprint values for each brake valve, I'd volunteer for writing a script that would insert them in engine blueprints. Not replacing whole blueprints, just updating existing blueprints with correct values.

Can't really get a good realistic working of that with just the core physics, I'm afraid.

Not necessarily accurate just consistent.

Exactly. I'll never drive a real train so I wouldn't know the difference anyway.

I really hope you only mean the difference between accurate and consistent and not between accurate and the bad values from 10 years ago ?
Really: I am not God, I am (was) a scientist. I know what "accurate" means in science.
And we play here a game, perhaps a simulator - but I do not want to discuss about that.
I just want to have a nice gameplay which gives me the feeling to drive a real loco (or what I think about driving such a beast)
