soo old reskin for the railworks gp9

Unread postby iLiketrains2009 » Sun Jul 24, 2011 4:08 pm

after downloading the soo line old reskin for the gp9 i noticed quite a few problems with the readme that i think should be updated
1. change the default geopcdx file to that of the SOUTHERN geopcdx file as its the ONLY file that works properly
2. dont use the cabview file it says in the readme instead delete the entire folder create a new one and then copy and paste the cabview geopcdx file from the southern folder into the soo old cabview folder. this was the only way i could get the loco to look correct and not have extra parts on the top or missing textures in the cab. im still experimenting with gp9_numbers files to find the right one for the loco as the one supplied just didnt look right. i tried the one from the southern but it was just a black border with clear numbers will try cnw later today. if that dosent work i will try the rio or or rock gp9_numbers files instead.

I am almost ready to give up on doing any repaints because I can't figure out how the different files connect to each other. RW seems to have some random way of where it places things and how different items look for other files. This thing worked on my computer and worked OK on two beta testers. I have spent the last week trying to get numbers to show up on another repaint that I did and we still don't have it working. All of my work for many years on computers seem to have some logical trail of folder connections but like VISTA Rail Works seems to have things working in the background that I sure don't understand.

This is the first comments I have heard that anyone is having problems. I would appreciate it if anyone else has issues and I'll try to fix them.
!!**sorry**!!

I got a missing texture error with the trucks but that was easily fixed by copying over the bogie texture from the SP GP9. I also took the liberty of removing that super high gloss look:

The reason the numbers are coming up like that is because on the Southern GP9, Derek has the number textures set up differently from the other GP9s.

Southern Pacific number texture:

Left side: Cab number
Right side: Numberboard number

Southern number texture:

Image

Left side: Numberboard number
Right side: Cab number

So, if you're going to make new number textures, you need to make sure that you have them set up on a template that is the same size and you have the numbers on the correct sides.

The numbers supplied are like the real one that I used to do the repaint.

now the loco you were working with was it 559 cause im looking at pics of that and the closest thing it looked like is the southern loco but the 559 does not have a bell so im at a loss as to which geopcdx file to use now as its got ditch lights on both ends and im not sure if the gp9 comes with a loco geopcdx file like this pictured here http://www.mtmuseum.org/jsr/roster/soo559.html or is it more like this http://www.mtmuseum.org/jsr/roster/Soog ... gram.jpgas far as i know the railworks gp9 does not have a model geopcdx file with tanks on the top like that but it does have the dynamic fans, its hard finding the exact model you need for a repaint im sure but this is the closest i could get with the southern will try an sp unit with non dynamics or a bnsf unit geopcdx file to test to see if i cant get it looking more like 2555.

i did a comparison of all my default gp-9's next to eachother and only two were a close enough match one was the rock island gp-9 the other southern and only one had a bell on the front so im guessing the southern one was the correct choice. will work on the numbers later as i like to make things a bit more realistic. i still need to give my soo and soo red locos numbers as they dont have any atm.

I didn't take notes on what I was doing when I made this although my bin file refers back to the default engine on the stuff where it's not spelling out the SOO_old. The numbers are referring to the SOO_Red files so if you haven't done this it will explain the lack of numbers.

if i can im gonna try and make the numbers look more like they do on the 559 with the curved style sp lettering also making them yellow to match the pinetree stripe yellow on the loco but i dont think photoshop can edit railworks textures and i have no idea how to edit a bin file lol. so i would have to change the left sp number to yellow from white and the right number for the numberboards to well i think clear would work as the light would come out as white anyway when you turn the lights on. otherwise it would have to be turned to white with a black bg. cause the left one is the cab number and right is number boards and the sp ones would look good on that cab in the same yellow as the stripe. i just need some editable textures or some program to make new ones. if anybody knows of a program to take the sp textures and make a template for new ones and can help me out it would be great because i just really love the soo line and want to help make this look as close to the real 559 as i can. though i know the loco's spawn with random numbers anyway lol.

There are more threads about repainting on this forum than you can shake a stick at. *!greengrin!*

Yes, you can edit the number textures.

In fact this reminds me that I owe Buzz some number work for his KCS.

The numbers on the real world locos with this paint job were not yellow, they were white, however you can make them any color you want. You can make it dull or dirty or whatever you choose.
