Well California will continue to burn and people will continue to be pushed out because of rising costs until all of the people who vote these idiots into office actually wake up and realize the mess they have created.

If these guys go any further left they will be in SF bay. It has become a nanny state. Doing what these elitists think is best for us all. Glad I am leaving next Spring.

Don't forget to pay your exit tax on the way out. New Jersey, Illinois, and California have an exit tax when you leave their respective states. They don't call it that when you file but it's definitely there. My dad found out when he leaves New Jersey after he retires it will charge him and my step mom almost $10 grand.

In actuality, the New Jersey “Exit Tax”, as it’s referred to, has been likened more to urban legend than fact by CPAs. The law requires sellers of New Jersey homes to pay the state tax in advance of moving, of either 8.97% of the profit on the sale of their home or 2% of the total selling price – whichever is higher.

The objective of the pre-payment is that no New Jersey residents can move out of the state without first paying taxes on the income from the sale of their home. At the end of the day, the New Jersey “Exit Tax” is simply misunderstood as an additional or special tax, instead of the pre-payment of potential income tax due that it really is.

The resulting question for many New Jersey taxpayers is, what happens if they don’t incur a profit on the sale of their home? The good news is that homeowners that incur a loss on the sale of their residence, and those who also pre-paid the tax before leaving the state, will be refunded the pre-payment when filing their NJ State Income Taxes.

I think the proper attitude should be righteous anger. The people in charge of the State should be held criminally responsible for allowing and in fact encouraging this come about. All of us will pay in the end one way or another not just the myopic citizens of California.

Being directly affected by this situation, I would much rather have a short planned power shutdown instead of a forest fire. There are a lot of decisions that have made this bad situation become worse. At this time it is the best option but not a solution. This weekend will be the worst combination of low humidity, heat, and high winds this year. It looks that it will be extended through Monday now. Another thing to realize is that being a community in the foothills there is a real danger that these mountain roads will not let people get out of the area fast enough if it is a fast-approaching fire so we have our crash packs ready to go.

However, I wonder how long it will be before other utility companies decide to limit their liability and start doing this crap. Just out of curiosity I did some checking here in the eastern states, and here is a little info I found that should be a ray of sunshine - pardon the pun - for you.

4kw Solar Cell system for a 1600sq ft home - $12,000
7kw Solar Cell system - $20,000.
12kw + Battery -$50,000
Complete disconnection from power grid - $80-$120,000.

Seems a bit steep, but it might be useful in the future.

Don't forget In the Pacific Northwest I think during some times of the year I think they go for longer periods than that without sunshine. In the upper Midwest recently we had one in eighteen days where we had any sun at all. In these parts of the Country solar is just not a option.

I have a strong feeling that PG&E's days are numbered, especially with this latest fire. I can see the state taking over control, and turning it into "The People's Utility". From listening to their news last week, you'd think the world was coming to an end with 40 mph winds. As Buzz can probably attest to, we get high winds a lot in the Midwest. But the power infrastructure is designed to compensate for high wind events.

Try living with this crap day in and day out. I live in Woodland, CA (for the uninitiated, it's approximately 20 miles Northwest as the crow flies from Downtown Sacramento) and we get pretty high winds during this time of the year. I've been here since 2012, and it's havoc annually. PG&E is irrisponsible and neglectful, that I can attest to. I say, let the state take over, and see how hard it is to be a steward of the land when you have to clear out thousands of miles of land to prevent this kind of mess. The environmentalists have made it impossible to do the type of forest management that is needed in this area to keep "planet Earth" from dying, though the "tree-hugger" method. PG&E should have said "screw you" to those wack-jobs decades ago, but were too afraid to tick them off. Now we citizens have to be subject to the whims of a monopolitstic corporation that is subject to abstract regulations that have no bearing in reality. Makes me long for moving to a colder, more stabilized region of the world where I can have my fireplace going without feeling guilty.
