3D Models

As there's no dedicated WIP folder for asset creation for TSW, I'm posting this here. I've got a route idea in mind for TSW, so I've started modeling some of the assets for it. Here's today's progress shots:

Details: ATSF water tower, based on the 1907 one in Chapelle, NM. 24' x 29'. The building next to it is what I assume to be the pump house. The details and general overview were taken from this picture: http://atsf.railfan.net/tanks/wtchapel1.jpg

The model has about 3,500 rivets, and took me all of 15 minutes to build. Simple texturing and rendering took the rest of the morning, 'cause Inventor's so intuitive about that. The model will look drastically different in UE4, as I'll have to retexture the whole thing.

Heaven knows when I'm going to be able to start really working in Unreal on this; while I've gotten some experience already creating models and importing them, the progress is still slow, and there's a lot I need to learn. Between the model nuances (export from Inventor to 3dsMax, then save for UE4) which loses details and finesse, to learning how to texture, I figure this will be a long trip. Plus, DTG will have to release the editor before I can work on the route.

Incidentally, does anyone know what sort of color the Santa Fe used to paint their water tank roofs with? I had to assume white for now.

I'll also probably try to modify and upload a previous project I'd been working on, the former GM&O depot in Alton, IL. It was demolished last year by the UP.

After being away for most of the weekend, I finally got some time to play around with these in UE4. The good-ish news is that they do come in quite easily. The bad news is that the meshes have been greatly simplified, and a single part can only receive one material. If you, say, created a roof, ladder, and water inlet on the same part, then they will have the same material as the rest of the part. Also, I haven't had much time to make materials in UE4, so I had to borrow some.

I also got that GM&O station added in. The materials are horrible, but since the station was an assembly (with 130 parts), I could specify each material for each part.

Now I need to figure out how to make materials properly, and how to create meshes for people to walk through. For now, each of these is a giant block.

That looks very good! Which programs did you use to model it in?

I think I'm starting to get the idea of these PBR materials. I grabbed some textures from Textures.com, and used the program Materialize to create these from .jpg images.

And hopefully something to replace the rather poor blue on that water tower.

i been importing my 3d content from blender to unreal and it easy. what really cool is unreal lets you make collision box in there engine settings and it works pretty well. now of coarse my content might not work in TSW editor once release depending on version. i using unreal 4 4.22 full release. it cool

Nice, I'm still waiting for the creation kit to come out so I can put my SP GS-3 in it.

TSW doesn't have any steam blueprints, so I don't see why that would be logical...

Because I'd like to figure it out myself. I do have an understanding of UE4 and my brother happens to create scripts and blueprints in UE4 for his part time living while outside of the National Guard.
