Question for experienced route builders

Unread postby RAILSOHIO » Fri Nov 30, 2018 11:58 am

So I have been plugging along on my multiple road, mega Ohio route for 8 years. The fact is I am modeling 6 different railroads with different speed limits, track curvature, switch stands, etc, etc.I have been using appropriate track rules for each part of the line. I know from the early days there are hazards of doing that. I thought I might create a track rule for the whole route, and re-lay or edit it later. So now it is later. I do understand that scenario creation is where this becomes a problem. If you are running a train that stays on that line that has all the same track rules,is that a problem? Then I have one example where a train will run on 3 different RR's to reach its destination.
Now a question regarding flange squeal. What is the formula that determines it? It varies depending on the track rules and curvature. Track that CAN be curved very tightly seem to have less of it. Seems backward. This is a lot to address, and I hope there is a good answer. Joe

I have not experienced any problems on my routes with using multiple track rules.

Joe,
Different track rules impact the display of frogs on switches. They will only show on your primary track rule. Regarding rail squeal, you can force that to happen by using _Bridge Iron, which you can select in Track Bed Rumble. Use the select tool on the track to do this. I have implemented this affect for several miles of crappy track in the branch line portion of my route.

Yes,I always make certain the same track rules are applied to crossings, switches, etc. So this implies the single track rule-rule is not such a big deal after all Thanks for the answers, and will welcome anyone else who chimes in.

A number of years ago, before I started on the Siskiyou Line, I made a route which used multiple track rules from different DLC. I had an issue in the scenario editor where the AI or player trains paths would give me an error when I tried directing them off of the lines using the old Cajon track rule, and onto tracks with the Donner Pass track rule. Looking back now, I don't know if it was something with how the junction was laid, or with the intersection of the differing track rules themselves.

Its nothing definite, but thats my only firsthand experience with the subject.

You can fix track rules and swap out track for any other type with RWTools.
