Hello all,
Quick update...

So work continues on Oak Island, I've finished the vegetation in the east end receiving yard, I will be working on the other areas of the yard next and then moving out to the scenery along the edge of the yard. I'll be hoping to get some decent progress pictures within the next couple days. Next area is the back shop/service area and then the container area by the hump yard.

So stay tuned!

Hey all, looking for suggestions:

So I want to start adding the buildings around Oak Island Yard, one of the groups of buildings happens to be the Northern State Prison complex.

Anyone have any ideas what assets I could use to make a believable bunch of prison buildings?

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, what payware routes/DLC are you already using for your route?

Need to get close ups of those buildings. Dip into the US/Euro Asset Pack Factory Buildings ... your going to combine a few assets to get these structures. Problem are color and the windows - but you will likely vertically stretch those buildings anyway. You lucky dawg - you get to have The Big House on your route. I recommend you play Johnny Cash's Folsum Blues over and over again for inspiration! *!greengrin!*

Those lyrics are someones' sig here on railworks by the way.

haha minerman that was funny...also for close-ups you can use Google maps in 3D view... you can see them pretty clearly.

Well I have a bunch of DLC...
Marias Pass, NJCL/Morristown, Sherman Hill, Penn Coal, Munich-Augsburg, Stevens Pass, Pacific Surfline, Miami, and NYNH (I think that's all of them). The majority is NJCL/Morristown and Steven's Pass for now...I'm using the other DLC for minor things.

Hey all,

One more thing...I'm trying to figure out what would make a good engine house at Oak Island... I've got a couple of ideas... but I was wondering if any route had a warehouse with doors that I could maybe shrink down to size or something? check out this video of what it looks like from last year below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgiXtd2m_g8

It's the tan building to the left of frame with the open door. It's got a bunch of smaller buildings (office i presume) on the back of it.

This is all I got for you.
Sherman Hill: Cheyenne Shed 02
Sherman Hill: Shed gen18 (flatten and heighten use to block out the other doors)

That is one heck of an epic scene for train simulator by the way.

I've tried my best but I can't seem to get it to work right...here's a close up of the actual engine house

It's a very tough spot to fit in.

Bro, do you know how to change the X,Y and Z axis to resize the building? Look at my previous shot. On the right of the picture is the flyout you get when clicking on object. The third (bottom) row is what you want to change. 1.00 equals 100%, so if you change that .90 the size of the object (on the specified axis) will change and be just 90% of the original dimension. In your case you may want to narrow the object. With this technique you can reduce ONLY the width, or height or length independently. The more you reduce or enlarge and object distorts the object. Resolving and hiding distortion is another subject.

Put up a picture of your finished work - or attempt already. Everybody loves pictures on RWA! *!lol!*

I accept Jameson's as gratuity. Deliver yourself and the whisky to Loughran's Tavern in Salisbury Mills, New York at a mutually agreed on time! *!greengrin!*

I know how to edit the dimensions, but the problem is it's not distorting the way i'd like... plus i want to be able to put loco's inside...i'll show you what i mean....
here's about 45 minutes worth of work...

Oh gosh - you want the trains to go in. I see the parts: roof, train shed, flattened yard office for the walls - good stuff. This is where this kind of work - on a focal point - gets hairy. You need more relief on the structure. The doorways need to be framed so you can see they have thickness - Munich Augsburg in scenery items has station supports ( i think they are called) they look like white/light grey girders. I would love to get the vents on the roof - you might be able to take a 100ft storage tank and shrink it enough to create the impression of those vents. The last thing is the hardest - the long wall is brick and painted white. I can see the blocked out windows of the original structure. The long wall needs some depth. Take a concrete block object or a retaining wall ribbon ( like I use for curbs) to make a foundation. This will add depth while we figure out what to do with the long walls. You might be able to suggest the window frames with the girders....

Your basic shape looks solid - its a matter of keeping proportion. I also suggest you go into editor and put some diesels down and place them EXACTLY how you see them in the picture. You can then use the trains as a visual reference. Sometimes these kit bashing projects work... and sometimes they just don't. Its so close up - that it will invite scrutiny by the player. You want that detail to hold up real close - this is hard stuff.

Sorry if I came across the wrong way regarding to changing proportions - I had to presume that you didn't know about it.

In conclusion - adding more details to the building as described above will make the it more believable in the next, hopefully, image you put up!
Keep it rocking!

Odd - I got a double post.

One more thing: See the brick verticals on the long wall ? Take a concrete block or the "station block" from NJCL to make in long and narrow to replicate that.

Its moments like this that I think conforming to workshop is stupid and I should just start making models. On the other hand, sometimes we actually pull it off and its amazing". This could be one of those amazing moments....

LOL I couldn't agree more... so doing more research on the structure it looks like they painted a tan(ish) color over the brick on the sides of the building and office attached to the back, they also seem to have put a concrete mortar(ish) thing on the front of the structure too... so i'm thinking... is there anything that could represent the painted brick? or should i just stick with brick walls and what not? I'm pretty sure there has to be something...
