TSW Under the Hood

Secrets excite me. I've been taking a peek inside of the .Pak file, and there are a couple of discoveries and a question for BNSFDude.

First off, the textures this time around seem to be Targa based. This is good news being that Targa can natively export from Photoshop, vs. having to have a plug-in convert to .ace before sending to Source.

For the sounds, Ogg Vorbis is the format. Does this have any advantages over mp3-dav, such as ease of editing, security, etc.

And finally, the content files for the individual rolling stock is xxx.uaasset.

What did you use to open the .pak?

I have not opened the Pak, but there are a few utilities out there that will allow you to see what is inside of it. Other games have "unPak"ing programs, such as DragonUnpaker, but the version that TSW uses is to new. Where is Mike Simpson when you need him!

BTW, comrades, if you do come across a viewing program and it asks for what version of the Unreal Engine was used, it is 4.12 or higher. So that would put actual work on the project at around January of 2016.

One of the benefits of OGG is that it's royalty free. Someone in the pipe pays for MP3, say for example like when Roxio sells their encoders or do encoding. This will change soon, however; I just looked up a few articles and the patents are due to expire soon and have already done so in the EU.

I have tried several extractors and none even got close to viewing let alone unpacking the .pak, which one let you view inside?

dup570beta
quickbms
pakviewer
unpacker

To name a few that failed.

OK, .pak extracted

Still no good as the texture files are 'T_AC4400_Body2_A.uasset' for example and I cannot view that.

I used the Unreal Engine to unpack the files and I will move over to the TSW UE4 forum to explain that.

I had to google that and found a video of '30lbs of tannerite vs 79 Ford Bronco' which made your point loud and clear, loud being the operative word in that sentence. !!*ok*!!

You have to just enough to get the job done. Google the one about the redneck who uses 4 lbs of the stuff on a lawn mower and ends up blowing his own leg off!

Let us defer the rest of this thread over to Marleyman's thread about unpaking with the Unreal Engine.
