Thinking of this for a route...

After my Thurmont and Branford route reached 100 downloads, I was thinking of what to do next. Of course, it's another New Hampshire thing. This time, it's something a bit more real.
The New England Southern Railroad. (And a little bit of PAR and Winnipesaukee scenic rr)


The New England southern railroad is a short line (I love short lines, can't ya tell?) in mid-New Hampshire. It's sole interchange point is with Pan Am railways in Concord (I think?) They mainly haul construction materials, grain, salt and LP gas. They also serve a Slurry plant in Tilton, NH monthly.
A couple of questions, though, for those who can answer.
1. Does anyone know where the Slurry plant actually is? I haven't been able to find it. (EDIT: Found it, never mind)
2. I'm debating with myself if I should stop the route at either Laconia or Meridith. Tell me what you think.
3. Where can I find other industries located along the line? Can't model a route without knowing the details.

Little bit of description of the scenery. Woods, more woods, causeways, swamps, Interstate 93, city area of Concord, Lake Winnipesaukee. Get it? Got it? Good.

Take it to Laconia,there is a lot more pretty lakefront trackage past Merideth,if you are starting from the north(LINCOLN)

Ha I just photographed them on Saturday! I was considering modeling this route but never got to it. I've got quite a collection of information on the line as well as tons of photographs of NEGS from the past and present as it is my all-time favorite railroad. I'd be happy to help! I have a couple NEGS repaints sitting around unused.

In my opinion going from Concord to Meredith would be suitable, that way you could get all of NEGS in its current state as well as the entire Winnipesaukee Railroad operation. There is always the possibility then of future expansions north to Plymouth, Lincoln etc. If you wanted more freight options I would suggest modeling the line in the era between the late 80s-early 90s when NEGS had customers all the way to Meredith and northward, of course that would mean more research on what is gone, what has changed etc, but it might be interesting...Or you could model the line in the present day, leaving the unused sidings in place for users to backdate themselves.

Luckily most of the line from Concord to Meredith is pretty flat around the lakes, with occasional grades North of Concord in Northfield and a few other spots.

This could be fun...caboose trains, NEGS slurry runs, an actual use for NEGS repaints...now you've got me going!

Good to see that you have some info, Rick! Because I could use some help.
1. As stated before, I've only been able to find the location of the Slurry plant. Do you have any other adresses for me? That would be great.
2. I'm a more modern man. Is there any news of possible customers north of Tilton? If not, I can make the modern route, then backdate it (opposite of what you did with the Champlain Division)

The slurry plant is their only current active customer, so not many other addresses to be had unfortunately. And no mention of other possible customers at the moment. Until about 7 years ago, as I'm sure you know, they ran all the way to Manchester almost daily and carried salt, gas, cement, telephone poles, bark-mulch, scrap, feed, sand and a number of other commodities. Pan Am seized the line back and kicked them out of Concord, leaving them with only the slurry plant in Tilton. They used to run the caboose train as well from Concord to Lincoln but that ended due to insurance costs and declining residence in the caboose village at Northfield.

They do have occasional special runs, usually helping move Winnipesaukee or Hobo Railroad equipment. Two years ago they pulled NH National Guard equipment to the Pan Am interchange in Concord for exercises in Michigan (possible scenario material here).

Only the Slurry Plant? That stinks. Then again, they also have the trans-load at their facilities. With the new military cars, the national guard train sounds like an amazing scenario idea! And lastly, It's convenient that the Feather river route came out, for I saw a WP caboose in the yard at Tilton. I'm going to start today, most likely beginning at 3M.

Chacal, interesting idea, but that's because they owned the line from Manchester to Tilton. I'm trying to stick with Concord to Meridith.

I have several photos of 3M I can send you. As far as assets are concerned, I could see this route being difficult without VNHRR , especially with all the brick mill buildings in and around Tilton
