UP GTEL Replacement Textures and Doppler Fix

Unread postby TheRailfan98 » Mon Sep 21, 2015 11:08 am

I'm on a gas turbine roll lately...I've just uploaded 2 more addons, a set of replacement textures and a doppler fix for the GTEL's running sound. Texture replacements include 2 versions (you can choose which one you'd like to use):

Preserved Weathering - Attempts to keep most of the weathering from the original model.
Cleaner Textures - Same as above but with less obvious weathering and brighter trucks.

Up by the end of the week hopefully, so here's a couple previews of the texture replacements *!!wink!!*

Nice!

But I am missing something: the characteristic bow wave of dirt just after the pilot.

Look at a few photos with dirty GTEL's and you'll see.
Also some streaks of fuel leaking down the tender wouldn't go amiss on the weathered locomotive.
So when you'll find the desire to do another one that hasn't seen the washing rack in a few weeks, here are some example photos:

Great job !!*ok*!!

There's still the problem of the sound cutting out abruptly when the camera is behind the tender, but that looks like it's a core code bug.

We need to get Walter to weigh in on this I think. It seems to me there was a conversation way back about the blending of locomotive and wagon sounds and he had some comments or a fix for this. I know I am a bit vague but it was some time ago and it might have been in a phone conversation not on here.

How many different channels of sound does it use? It is three rail vehicles after all.
The game engine only has limited sound playback capacity when it comes to the number of channels that can be played simultaneously.
Each sound has a priority, and with so many asking for #1, some sounds must be dropped.

Perhaps also the sound card is a limiting factor. Most players use only onboard sound. Dedicated sound cards are a thing of the past?

When I first saw the thread title, I was thinking "That thing has really nice textures... and someone already messed with them?"
But I really love the one with the bright trucks. *!greengrin!*
As far as the sound, I can hear other engines for quite a distance after a train passes.

The limitation on sound channels was in the past. Now (and not just recently either) the number of channels is practically limitless. The FEF-3 has a huge number of sounds that are played together and doesn't have any problem with them. It's not a problem of discrete versus on-board sound cards either - I've tried both. The priorities thing isn't really used either. I also stopped using sound instance groups because it works better without them.

Any help would indeed be very much appreciated. There's nothing unusual in the sound blueprints, so there's no obvious fix, but if there's anything at all that can fix it, that would be wonderful.

If there is no Doppler effect, it is a possibility the exterior turbine sound is a stereo file. Load it with DAV Decoder and convert the file to mono, then it will play correctly in the exterior. The stereo sound can be retained for the interior.

That's what the OP already did (to fix the missing Doppler effect).

I think I might have thought of a solution to the sound cutting out. I'll try it out when I get home in a couple of days.

Did the OP try clearing the cache for the Gas Turbine? Sometimes mods don't take when the BluePrint.pak for the Asset isn't cleared first.
I've run into that with simulation bins, especially when using Quick Drive for testing.

I posted elsewhere but I discovered that if the GTEL is not hooked to any wagons it doesn't cut out. And it's precisely at the point where the car passes the line if you have it in mode 8 and you are off to the side.

While I would like to do a re-weather, I have almost 0 experience in weathering, I might give it a try though (mine was just attempting to preserve what the original textures had). If it doesn't work out, if someone more adept with weathering would like to use my cleaner textures as a base send me a PM and we can talk *!!wink!!*

Buzz is right on this, the sound works fine when running light engine for some reason (which is what I have done most of for testing).

Yes, and I think I know why. I'll test my idea tomorrow.
