Pacific Surfliner (Sounds, and basic questions)

Unread postby Angelo » Fri Oct 24, 2014 10:16 am

Hey guys, I have been a long time follower here but haven't posted too often. I have a couple of question that maybe the more seasoned members can answer for me. I recently purchased the combo LA + San Diego Commuter and it has really got me back into the sim from a period of absence.

1. What are your guys' recommendations to replace the F59phi loco sounds (Horn, Bell, Prime mover) as well as Cab Car. I have been searching the file library here but was looking for an insiders opinion.

2. Is there a fix for the missing Alerter that puts the train into Full Service?

3. I have seen on the forums that there are repaints in the works for the Coaster and Metrolink sets, are these still WIP? I gathered from the forums that the coaster set might be released but haven't found anything on that yet.

4. I am aware of brake issue with the Phi, but is there a fix for the oscillating ditch lights that illuminate the headlights at the rear of the train?

Thanks a bunch guys for your help, I do apologize if these have been discussed before, like I said I fell out of the TS world for a bit and now I am getting up to speed reading all the threads I missed.

I look forward to your direction, thanks everyone.

1. Not sure why you'd want to replace the sounds on the F59; they're pretty darn good!
2. No.
3. I believe that there are WIP Metrolink and Coaster skins for the F59 - none available yet though.
4. No. To remedy this, turn the headlights off and on again.

Well the bell and to make the horn quill-able like the Coaster cab car, wow the Coaster has amazing sounds! Roger to the other as I figured. I already did alot of modifications (Physics, Sounds, etc) how do I save this from getting ruined if a "File Integrity Check" is ever ran again? I don't want to start over if this happens.

What I do so I don't have to remember is make a copy of my changed file and name it whatever.xxx and leave it in the same spot as my altered file. If there is a verify or update that impacts this the one with the suffix .xxx will be ignored and is right there to rename one again and replace the original file. Either that or set up a "Two Click" restore that will fix all your mods after any of the above.

It is a pity that there are no 3rd party's in the US that make sounds for the American locos. Over in the UK they have Armstrong Powerhouse who make more realistic sounds for english Diesel and Electric locos and Steam Sounds Supreme for the steam engines.

That's not correct. There are several locomotive sound packs in the library.

There are two 3rd-party sound packs for the SD40-2, both are very good.
One is Oovee's payware and the other is simer4's freeware pack.

Are they doing it full time. The 2 English companies I mentioned are doing it full time and are releasing sound packs all the time. Just about every release DTG do of a English loco they go out and record sounds off the actual engines including outside sounds and inside sounds in the cab. Most of the English locos that DTG release, there is usually one running on a UK heritage railway.

Let's see now. There is not only Anthony's excellent payware sound pack for the SD40-2 but in the library there are the following: Sound enhancement for Dash9,ES44,GP38, SD70, and a freeware SD40 along with a huge choice of horns and bells. Not too shabby.

In the UK, you have heritage railways which are typically very friendly to recording. Many of the locomotives produced by DTG to date has been stuff mostly in active service. The Class 1 railroads aren't friendly at all when it comes to recording engines. Hence why my progress is rather slow.

A reason for this is most US locos sold as official DLC are actually made by 3rd parties and already have good sounds.
