RS-1 Repaints

Unread postby ricksan » Wed Jun 11, 2014 8:34 pm

RS-1s were owned by numerous roads and each one had its own paint scheme. I'd love to see as many of these as possible made available to the community.

In some cases repainters may not be able to realize their ideas given the current way that locomotives are modeled and textured (even with the help of the repaint kit), primarily because the parts that display things like logos and dynamic numbers turn out to be in the wrong place or are the wrong dimensions. The DSS&A and Green Mountain "repaints" that I recently uploaded to the RWA file library required minor adjustments to the number and logo geometry. Minor to me, anyway, since I'm the only one who has the source files.

I'd like to make an offer. PM me with your repaint proposal and I will provide the geometry file to support your idea. Sound good? I thought so...but wait, there are conditions. *!sad!*
  • Geometry modifications may include resizing and/or relocation of logo and dynamic number parts.
  • A minimal amount of other very simple modifications will be made, subject to mutual agreement. Examples include elimination of the bell (some engines had them under the frame), relocation or elimination of the firecracker antenna.
  • Additional or alternative horns may be feasible, subject to availability from my inventory. If a different horn is installed, you must provide the audio files to go with it.
  • You must provide all new artwork including logos and numbers.
Serious proposals only, please. If you send me a picture of some locomotive and say, "wouldn't this be cool," I'll probably ignore it. What will get my attention would be along these lines: a jpg image of a finished texture sheet (specifically the ones that end in ...parts001, 002 and 003) and some guidelines as to what modifications to lettering, logos, numbering and other parts would be required.

I hope we can make this happen!

Good offer, Rick. I've just finished a NERW reskin and plan to work on a Southern Railway unit next.

Speaking of repaints, I'm working on a weathered version of the RW&A RS-1.

RS-1_WX.jpg

I used the repaint kit for the one on the right. The differences between weathered and unweathered are a bit subtle so I guess I should amp up some of the weathering layers that I added to the texture sheets. Also need to mess up the white parts of the handrails and maybe a few other things. One thing I find annoying: The checkerplate deck uses a shadow mask for AO shading and to grime things up a bit, but the overhead game lighting essentially wipes it out leaving only the pristine metal surface.

I'm not sure it's necessary to fiddle the weathering layer all that much, except for the handrail ends. Unless you're doing one of the New Haven units around the time of the PC takeover, weathering tended to be about as subtle as you already have it, especially in the '50s, when most railroads (even shortlines) took good care of their equipment. OTOH, I've often seen the handrail ends worn to bare metal in places (typically the upper middle section), especailly back when alkyd enamels were the industry standard.

Can you spell SP&S? My childhood friend needs some loving... I'll get the base done and find some photos.

Local rumor had it that the SP&S stood for Spare Parts & Scrap. !*roll-laugh*! Since the road was the off-hand child of the Hill lines, probably true.

A model, but....

Looks right from this...

Edit: the chevrons were yellow. It will need a cab number, and a peace prize (no Bell)..

Ex-C&NW?

I haven't added the C&NW lettering and numbers yet. The RW&A logo was there and I kind of liked it.

Very close! Thanks to Rick and his efforts, we have a very accurate model. Some testing, and maybe a bit of touchup, and it is ready.

.
Can't see the details

It's possible that the problem lies in this Old Fart's tired, old eyes, but I seem to have a small problem with many repaints such as the one depicted here: Use of the colour 'Black' seems to render such detailed items as trucks, bogeys and the other underpinnings of a loco into "one big amorphous blob". Can I be so bold as to perhaps request that such large areas of black be replaced with a dark shade of grey (viz Norfolk Southern)?

I truly believe that the repaints would have a much more appealing presentation.

Cheers, -Jon

Great!
I think a black roof like the NH above would look even sharper.
