No horn on GP9

Unread postby Griphos » Sun Jun 08, 2014 8:23 am

So, the last couple of times I've run a GP9 I have no horn. All the rest of the sounds seem to be there. I'll do some quick tests today to find the extent of the issue.

Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem. I'd really rather not do a verify cache just to track down a missing horn.

It might be the same problem that affects several locos, including the Consolidation (and sometimes, unfortunately, the FEF-3) - I'm fairly certain the core code has a problem with the internal control value "horn". It goes silent if you edit a scenario and go in to play the scenario directly, without going back to the main menu first. Sometimes, even that isn't enough, and you have to exit and restart the game.

Thanks. I'm thinking that's not the issue for me, since I don't edit scenarios, and the problem is there when it's the first scenario I run after starting. It does seem to only be the GP9 with any version of it. I don't think I've changed the horn on any locos. I don't really mess with horn sounds, or any sounds other than adding Krellnut's wagon sounds.

Is this the RSC one or Brimley or BriKit?

RSC. And it appears to be just the GP9. All versions of it that I've tested so far lack horn sound.

Can anyone point me to what files in what folder I should check to see if everything is kosher?

I see the GP9Pack01 folder in the Assets/RSC folder, and there appear to be the correct horn files there:

I can play the .wav files and they sound correct, but no sound in sim.

Nothing, huh?

I'm thinking that even a verify cache won't fix whatever is the problem since the files appear to be there.

Does anyone know what file I should try to look in to see how the horns are referenced?

I haven't got the GP9, but I can tell you where it's done in the HSC GP7:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\RSC\HorseshoeCurve\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\gp7\Cab\gp7 Horn.proxybin

You need to look for the GP9's audio control blueprint and search it for "Horn".

I'm kind of guessing here because my GP9 files are kind of jumbled up but it looks like you modified the horn for this at one time since RSC uses the .dav not .wav files and since then a update or verify changed your horn back to the default one but maybe unsuccessfully so a local verify if it's not too big a pain might just restore a horn. I have the same .wav horns in my folder as you do but the active one right now is the default one. I'm sure I didn't change it back since I don't care for it but it apparently isn't in my two click fix. I don't have time until tonight to explore further but that might give you a clue.

Okay, those are good clues. I'll do some digging and see if I can both find any mod I might have installed and find the proxybin file suggested and see what is referenced.

If you find out more, Buzz, let me know.

Welp, I looked for some horn mod file I'd installed and couldn't find one, but I sure must have at some point. I looked in the appropriate /Cab/ folder mrennie pointed me to, and clever "Past Griphos" had apparently thought to make a copy of the original horn.proxyxml file. So I replaced the current file with that one and lo and behold, horn sounds. I looked in the one I had been using and sure enough, it references .wav files, while the original references .dav files.

So, thanks for the help pointing to the right places to look. I have horn again. I think I'll just keep the default.

Try this out. *!greengrin!* Make sure you back up before you start and if you have RW running a restart is required before it's recognized.
