wagon behavior

Unread postby eyein12 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:21 pm

I also am having an issue with my boxcar and even well cars. they behave irratically when they roll. sometimes they bounce, or a bogie gets stuck in the air like this pic below.

what causes these issues? what values need to be changed?

Could be so many things...
- physics values such as center of gravity, ease of derailment, etc. (check with values from some cars that behave correctly);
- collision geometry vs carlength & coupler position (mentioned in the dev docs);
- problem with parenting in the geometry file;
- etc

You've become an unknowing beta tester for Dovetail's North American Maglev freight train that is able to use existing rail assets. !*roll-laugh*!

But seriously....Chacal is right. It could be any number of factors and any combination of them. They fixed the stretchy couplers awhile back, but I made a long, heavy train with a consist of many different models of locos. The SD75 seemed to be the only one that still had stretchy couplers, although I haven't bothered yet to test to confirm this otherwise.

When it comes to physics, braking, acceleration, etc etc.... this sim is consistently inconsistent. Either it could be fixed inadvertently in a future update or may never be fixed. Hopefully someone can provide you the values that could help you. I've not yet taken the dive into values other than running a 3rd party patch fix.

100% of all the cars in this sim that I have run run just fine. I don't know why we keep getting crossways but there is some value that will fix this problem without accusing RSC of some evil doing once again. This will magically get fixed in the next couple of days I bet.

You do realize these well cars and the boxcar are created by Ian, right? !!bang!!

So I have a feeling he'll get it figured out like Buzz said.

It's usually because the mass is to low. When I up the mass on the coal cars from 25 to 100 everything works just fine, but then scenarios get broken because there aren't enough engines on the train to pull the load.

I did some experimenting on the Cajon Pass, well cars awhile back and the trains handle more realistically with a mass of about 45 - 50, but same thing happens with the broken scenarios.
Fixing the scenarios is as easy as adding power most of the time.
You would think that adding weight would make them more prone to tipping, but not so in my experience. The added weight usually makes them more stable in turns etc and allows for a realistic number of engines in the consist.

That fix works for a number of "tippy" types of cars. low side gondolas, coal hoppers, some stack cars.
It also fixes the coal car creeping uphill problem and/or the problem where they fly uphill at line speed in notch one.

I always thought stacks were light, but I just recently saw, that containers can be up to 67,000 lbs gross weight.

I do heavy loads from 80 - 110 and lighter cars at 45 - 60.

No one accused RSC of being evil. Unless the man made modifications to the sim that caused this as some unintended side effect, RSC would have some blame if they missed the bug in QC.

I had an event (for which I made a thread and video) in which my SD45 would mysteriously derail a matter of yards after starting the train up in Victorville in quick drive. Did the same exact thing with an ES44AC train in San Bernardino. In both instances it would do it every time in the same spot. Then a couple days later, both all of a sudden stopped derailing. And no sim update had released in that time to explain it.

I've had issues popup in this sim randomly over the years, although it's been much more rare now. I haven't had a physics explosion/train tornado in almost 2 years. When I first got the sim, they happened on a somewhat regular basis depending on the route, where on the route and what action was being taken.

This could be an issue that clears up on it's own for him or not. I'd try clearing the cache for the heck of it for starters. If you get desperate, do a fresh base reinstall and see if it's still there. If not, add each 3rd party content and modifications one at a time, testing in-between to see which one might be causing the issue.

This sim has issues. Some need a fix, some just fix themselves for no explainable reason. It's the nature of the beast we call Railworks. !!det!!
