Michael Stephan's B&O Caboose

Unread postby harryadkins » Sat Jan 08, 2011 11:31 am

Has anyone else had problems repainting Michael Stephan's "Baltimore & Ohio Caboose Re-Paint" found here in the Railworks America download library? When I try to edit the caboose.bin file with RW Tools or RSBin, the file saves as a 0kb file. I read a couple of articles on the UKTrainSim forum about serz.exe not saving .bin files with errors. RW Tools doesn't show any errors with the .bin file, but when I try to display the textures used by this asset, I get an error message. This is a nice model and I am trying to repaint it into a Colton & Northern model. Any ideas?

Hi,

Just had a look into my assets folder, but all files loaded into RW-tools and KRS-Binconvert just fine. No idea what might be wrong, is anybody else having the same problems with this model?

Can you make changes to the BINs inside RW-tools and then save the BIN file? If that works, you can still do a repaint by making a renamed copy of the entire caboose folder (one of the two, C450 or C467), then using RW-tools to edit the paths and vehicle name in the cloned BIN, then also using RW-tools to convert the textures (you most likely only need to repaint one texture: cabside.tgpcdx).

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply. I can repaint the cabside texture with no problems. My problem is in trying to edit the .bin file. Both RW Tools and RWBin will open the file and allow me to edit the name and such. However, when I try to save the .xml file with RW Tools, RSBin, or manually dropping on serz.exe, I get an error message and the .bin file is saved with a 0kb size (blank). I have not had this problem with any other asset and even went to Steam and verified my file cache. Both B&O cabooses (cabeese?) work fine within Railworks. I am going to try downloading the file again today and re-installing it. Perhaps I have a file issue. Thanks again for your help and your fine products. Keep up the good work.

Hi,

The original file seems to be intact. Just tried it, opened the caboose.bin in RW-tools, changed the name, clicked on "save railworks file". All worked well.

However, something similar to what you described happened to me before, with different assets though. I think it was caused by accidentally deleting or overwriting some of the "code" in the BIN file (all the stuff between the < > brackets). If something gets changed there it is very likely to corrupt the code language, which will cause serz.exe to fail on attempting the conversion. You may even have to quit serz.exe manually then in the task manager (ctrl+alt+del -> task manager -> processes tab). By the way, RW tools also uses serz.exe to convert the files, so the error is likely the same.

Cheers,
Michael

I was finally able to "solve" the problem and edit the .bin files. When cloning the asset in RW Tools, I had selected the C-450 subdirectory and the asset within. I corrected the problem by selecting the caboose_BO subdirectory and cloning the selected asset. Now, I need some help with weathering my relettered cabeese.
