Sometimes an Omelet, Sometimes Scrambled Eggs

Unread postby DashingDan » Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:41 am

Been making a first attempt at repainting and trying to figure out why sometimes things come out right and sometimes the texture I've been working on (for a freeware SW-1200) turns into a scrambled mess on the loco.

Is it possible that I'm messing myself up in photoshop if I "Save" in .psd BEFORE saving a texture in bmp format?

I'm also wondering if running the same texture file "through the mill" multiple times could be a problem. I'm using RW_tools -> dds -> another prog to bmp -> photoshop, and then back the other way again after editing. (I guess I should try the PS plugin to deal with dds directly, but I've got an old version of PS that's 32 bit running on a 64 bit win7 pc and I just get this feeling I could be getting myself into trouble piling plugins on top of that.)

Any suggestions/theories/comments and comic insight will be greatly appreciated!

Plugins will be fine, I quite often use 32bit PS on a 64bit os. Saving in psd first won't hurt. I wonder if you've got issues with generating mips, but without seeing the end result or knowing what programs you're using ( and quite likely I don't know how to use them ), can't tell.

I would suggest using RSBintool to insert/extract dds files from tgpcdx, you can see exactly what you're doing with it while you're doing it.

Sorry this took so long, but here's a screenie showing what happens when it goes right and when it goes wrong. It often seems like the only way to get things right is to clone a fresh copy of the default loco using RW_tools and then when I get the bmp texture into photoshop I can drag layers from previous files saved as psd into the new texture file and go on from there to make further modifications.

I should probably know what mip maps are, but I'm afraid my course in self-education hasn't quite gotten that far. !!howdy!!
