A repaint question....(sort of)

Unread postby secondhandhero » Thu Jul 07, 2011 6:08 pm

Hi everyone this is my first post, but I've been hanging around reading the forums long enough that I feel like I'm getting to know the regulars. Thanks to what I've learned (mostly here) I have been doing some repaints, and if no one minds I'd like to share some of them. Now, I know not to include the model( the *.GeoPcDx files) with the repaints, but my question is what is normal practice prior to uploading? I mean, for example, I have done a few repaints of the GP40 included in the portland terminal route. Now should I Email Rick and ask permission to make my repaints public? ...or is it considered okay as long as it doesn't include the models? Also, is there any files, other than the models, that shouldn't be included? Thanks for the help, this place is an invaluable source for information, Tim

You're correct that the GeoPcDx files can't be included, but that's really only with payware models. If the model is freeware, you can include the geometry files if you want to make installation a little easier for the end user. I don't think you need to ask Rick for permission to repaint the GP40. I could be wrong though so I guess it wouldn't hurt. Make sure you give him full credit for creating the original locomotive in your readme as well. And as far as I know, the GeoPcDx files are the only thing that can't be included with your repaint.

Depends entirely on who made it. General assumption with payware is that you're free to reskin unless stated otherwise, but that's only a rule of thumb - best read any documentation thoroughly first. It's usually clearly stated when distributing repaints isn't permitted, like for IHH models/RSC "Tornado"/Oovee buffer HST. If in doubt, ask.

Freeware is entirely dependent on the creator - practically all of them will have no issues ( and you can include the geo files for freeware and anything that comes with the core RW distribution ) but once again, read the docs and if you're still unsure ask the creator. There's no hard & fast rules to any of it, sorry. I always ask, unless the creator has abandoned the models.

I have wondered about other files too - what happens if you tweak a sound file? that's the same thing as tweaking a texture, only it's a bit easier to reuse a sound sample elsewhere. You are no closer to re-assembling the model for free with a sound file included, though.

I think Rick was going to add a repaint procedure at his web site in regards to repaints of his stock. I don't think he has done that yet...had a quick look and could not see anything in regards to.

I " always ask " whether it be freeware or payware and did so when I repainted Rick's GP40.
That way you know exactly what is required from the author if it is not clearly defined and stated in the documentation.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies guys, I've sent an email to Gtrax. I did go through the docs that came with PT and did not see anything about repainting rolling stock, so I just thought I'd ask.
