Input Mappers

While working on a new US steam loco, I ran into an input mapper related problem. Blow the whistle and the bell turns on with no way to turn it off. After looking at the input mappers, the reason was obvious: there was no turn off for the Bell and it was being turned on by either the B key or the Space bar.
I first changed the B key to a toggle switch but that didn't work. I believe the reason is that there are two distinct uses for the B key. So I ended up and made the bell driven in toggle mode by the shift-B key. Works fine now. I could have eliminated the second use of the B key (non-glare wipers) since I don't drive them modern thingamagigs.
My questions for the group are (1) is there a better solution; (2) what are others doing?

No response? Maybe it's because most of us here have little or no experience remapping the control keys. That's certainly my case.

What you're doing sounds like a reasonable approach. We certainly don't need movable sun visors in a steam locomotive. On the other hand, movable windows would be a useful addition.

Unfortunately there's hardly any of you guys out there doing this. The only other guys I know are Cecil and Dick Cowen. And the guys at RS seem preoccupied with RS2, what can you do except keep pluggin? !*don-know!*
