Repainting problem

Unread postby ATSF3814 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 6:54 pm

I've decided that I want to give repainting a try and so I started out with stycx's repainting tutorial using the red caboose. I got the texture coverted to dds but when I opened it in GIMP 2.6, I got this:

I also tried opening it with Paint.net but still got the same result. Sty suggested adding a new layer under it and painting it black. While it helped, it looks too dark now I think:

Any ideas on how I can fix it?

Also, I don't have Photoshop. I'm just using freeware programs.

Your problem is gimp using the alpha channel as transparency, when it isn't. This link should help, the guy starting the thread has the same problem. Here's a video for how to get specular map information ( that's what's currently making your image partly transparent ) back into your image.

Apps that do that deliberately with no way of switching behaviour really annoy me; Photoshop just treats the alpha channel like any other channel.

I'm curious how? I haven't used GIMP enough to work out a decent way.

First I did what Sty suggested. Putting a completely black layer underneath the texture. Then I turned the threshold alpha option down to zero and now it looks fine.
