Repaint Frustrations

Unread postby bloodonfire3 » Thu May 07, 2015 1:48 pm

Having recently finished a milestone in my route I decided to shift back to repainting some equipment to run, and after trying both VRC & G-Trax models of the GP40, I'm having some trouble trying to get a new repaint to load in the sim. The process is the same, copy the folder, rename and edit the BIN file, export and import .DDS, but every time I load any of the two models, I get the greyed out blank nothingness that DTG offers when no rolling stock is present. Has anyone had issues repainting either of these models? I'm scratching my head for a solution, but I've come three ways to Sunday and nothing to show for my effort.

Can you send me the file. I'm sure it's nothing major. There vrc model should be easy but the bins are always tricky to get the \whatever\ in the right places.

blood, I think you've done a mistake in editing the .bin file. I test it, and it works fine.
The loco in the front is the real, the back one is the test loco.
Copy the Default folder...rename it to whatever you want...for example: Test
Open the bin file with serz...replace the GP40 Pan Am with GP40 Test...and all \Default\ with \Test\.
If you do it without these ->>> \ then you maybe overwrite things in the bin which are wrtitten like this ->>> default.
Hope this help you with your problem. *!greengrin!*

It could be that I'd forgotten all about the serz. Normally I just copy+paste+edit the bin file straight out of the box, but that seems to work best with RSC/DTG stock. Maybe that might be the hangup. Thanks Sibell!

RW Tools is great for editting bin files, no serz required as it uses it's own serz stuff and gets it out of your way.

You can associate the Tools so all you have to do is double click a bin file and it opens right up, ready to edit.

And it automatically make a backup called a .bak so if you want to go back to where you were it's right there. That feature has saved me hours after me butchering up a bin file.

I've been using the donationware version of RW Tools for the past few months now, and up till this time, I've done repaints on mainly RSC and one of Ian's stock. It was when I switched to VRC and G-Trax that my troubles began. I just can't pinpoint the problem.

Re-reading your first post I'm not sure I understand your problem. Can you explain this a little more?

When you select stock from the custom menu (in the Quick Drive Menu Section), you get a list of what's available. if the sim loads it, the stock show up on a split view on the right. If the sim can't or refuses to load certain stock due to repainting or other, the sim renders that split view on the right in the custom menu grey, meaning that stock is not available. This is my method ensuring my repaints are working properly, and for some reason, my repaint is just not being rendered. I have the template from VRC, and repainting the long hood as a sort of preliminary start, and when I go to this custom view, it just gives me a blank area (the list to select from on the left shows), which I'll demonstrate below.
The images shown are of the G-Trax GP40, which I thought would be easier to repaint, but still same results.

I didn't even know this function existed. Learn. Something every. Day. I'll get on this plus the bin you sent as soon as I get off work.

I use the Serv. way and I have successfully repainted Greatnortherner's cylindrical hopper, and I use a test scenario I created just for testing repaints I get. I usually get my results as soon an I click the car I want and testing, usually if it works it shows up, if it doesn't work or it is broken it will not show up, that's my method of testing my repaints. It's a pretty thorough way of checking the repaints, plus if there's something wrong with the physics or anything else like a faulty coupler, you can test it using the scenario itself as your testing grounds. Works for me.

Main Menu -->> Drive -->> Quick Drive -->> Whatever the last locomotive it was that you ran -->> Custom Menu located to the right, immediately preceding links to individual locomotives to drive.
After selecting Custom, there is another link that says Create New. Click on that brings up this menu, which is what I normally do to create consists.
In other words, the current consist editor as provided by DTG.

@blood...
I believe you have a GeoPcDx file ( shape file ) problem. Make sure the loco and cab Geo's are in the correct folders and the the path in your repaint .bin points to them both.
Exactly what Sibell stated above...

Cheers...

I just uploaded an Arkansas-Oklahoma reskin of the G-Trax GP40. When you can download it, why not take a look at my .bin file edits with RW Tools. I can't tell you how many times I've overlooked a minor detail that makes a major difference. Be patient. It's worth the time to see your reskins in the sim.
