Riding along?

Hey Tom, I know this is an old post of yours but I have the same question. The problem is once you sit in the seat, any seat, you are given control of the train. You can ride along of course if you don't sit down. If you sit down it will tell you when the next service is due to go. Just make sure you get up from the seat and stand in the cab or ride outside on the walkways before the train is due to leave.

It has been discussed before, but when standing in the cab, the track unevenness and superelevation have the cab swaying and tilting instead of the horizon when seated at the controls.

TSW:RT is already dead on the German board. Steamcharts show a peak at release date and a quick ebb away the week after. German players roughly doubled the daily number.

Yes, you can release the brakes and shove the lever up to notch 8 and get up and walk around the cab, but, then you need to go back to your seat to do anything else, I thought only you can drive the loco.

Not necessarily.

Pick a train from the Scheduled Services, and stand up from the seat. You might want to set the correct headlights first though.
After about two minutes, a message will pop up asking you to abandon the Service. Click yes and a AI crew will take over and you can ride along.

You will be bouncing about a little and sometimes get thrown off the train.
There is still something wrong with the scripting and collision bounding boxes, also with the cab sound occlusion failing.
AI physics is different from driven physics and even more unrealistic.

But you can explore the cab, open doors and windows, etc.

When you ride in one of the European passenger trains, you can take a seat in the passenger compartment and sometimes have a few rides up and down the line before the train leaves for a destination off the map and you are left behind in some bare wilderness.

Not in all US locomotives, DTG made all seats hot, i.e. linked to the controls in the GP38. In the SD40 and AC4400 you can take the conductor's or the brakeman's seat. Don't know about the GP40.

The naming of the seats is not according to US practice: it is engineer, conductor and brakeman.
Only the speedometer works and trains accelerate and decelerate like a light engine, as if the consist is weightless.
One assumes the scheduled timings are made this way, they are nigh to impossible to attain while driving in a more prototypical fashion.

While seated, your view tilts with the cab, while standing, your view stays level.
