Roads with no traffic?

I need help with roads. I tried many different roads from several different sections and when I start to run trains I have no traffic running on the roads I selected. Now the payware routes I have, the traffic is running fine. I'm trying to install roads on a route that I'm making but having a hard time getting my roads to work. I wonder if there is a setting that has to be activated for traffic to show up. I have one road that works but I don't know how to identify it so I can use it somewhere else. Could someone give me some advice or the name of a good road to try.
Also having a tough time figuring out how to move the little arrows to set up a level crossing.
