DEM_ hgt files

Unread postby davedingler » Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:59 am

Hey all, I've been toying with the idea of using hgt files in the DEM/STRM file to add terrain to my route. In reviewing the hgt files DL from USGS, I came across some folders labeled "N29W095.hgt, N29W094.hgt, etc. These folders have files such as N30W095t16.hgt etc.

What are these files and should they be inserted into the DEM/STRM folder? or just the .hgt folders containing the files or none of the above?

Just copy all .hgt files into the DEM/SRTM folder and not the actual folders which contain them.

The ones at the USGS contain holes. Use the ones from here:

OK, I must be doing it wrong. I downloaded the file from the above link, unzipped it and put the appropriate .hgt file in the DEM/SRTM folder but when I try to import in the route editor I get nothing but flat land. I know I have the correct coordinates for the route because the google overlay is correct.

This is my first attempt so it's probably something stupid! !**duh*!!

Check to see if your RouteProperties.xml latitude and longitude entries contain 5 decimal places. That's what prevented me from importing terrain in TS2013.

This is fun!

It is kinda working out for me. The mountains are showing up, but the most distant are cutting in and out. In reality you would really be able to see them from the same distance. I can't really complain though, it 10 times better than what it was.

Yeah, I remembered reading that somewhere and added the extra zeros (with RW Tools) but still no love. I only have one file in the folder as it covers the area I need. That wouldn't be a problem, would it? !**conf**!

It might, since HGT file numbers are offset a bit. Try downloading surrounding data and see if the import works.

Also note that if you used a route template not of your own creation (ie: Donner Pass so that you can create something in Oregon) it ain't gonna' work.

So the coordinates in the file name aren't correct?? I'll try adding adjacent files tonight. Also, is the directory where these go in the main railworks/DEM directory or is there another one in the route folder? That would make more sense but I saw the DEM folder in the main directory and put the SRTM folder in there with the .hgt files.

I used RW Tools and his tutorial to set up the route. When I was adding the extra decimal places to the route properties I noticed another set of coordinates immediately below the route origin. They were very different but I have no idea what they're for.

Thanks for the help!
