Anybody know how to make 3d buildings, for route design? What programs do I need? I need to know how to make complicated buildings, such as the Rensselaer Rail Station. Image

Thanks

Nathan

I will offer that Blender is a free alternative to 3D Crafter and very powerful with a lot of tutorial videos and decent plugins for Railworks work.

Here is some info

This fellow has a series of videos that are worth ever second. It is a powerful program with a bit of a learning curve but not as bad as it may seem at first.

No, there are two free exporters for Blender.

I didn't know there was free 3D software that could import to the game.
I've been wanting to try to create models for a while but never had the funds.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention !!*ok*!!

Thank God for that! I can't afford a $90+ dollar program!

A year ago I followed the "making an engine" tutorial in the dev docs, using Blender instead of 3DSMax.
My creature worked very well in the game.
I should have made a new tutorial then. I'll try to remember.

Here is a basic tutorial to get started:

http://www.pacificcoastairlinerr.com/simplebox.pdf

It is written for 2.49

You need this exporter:

I started with the basic tutorial.

Also download the free 3dCrafter, do the the in-program tutorials they have. This will give you the basics of 3d modeling.

The methods there can be applied to any 3d program. That is how I learned blender by doing the 3d Crafter in-program tutorials.
The only difference is the command structure.

Also "Google" Trainz blender tutorial, there are lots of tutorials about building in blender.

That is one, there is also the ones at the trainz/wiki

I agree with doing tutorials for as many tools as possible. Thing is, all the concepts are the same and there is skill to be gained.

Question, is anyone using GMax? It is also free. I have used it for a few projects in the past.

Should be creation, not creature.

No no, creature.

Alright. So I got Blender, and I know how to use it. Does anyone know how to model e building in Blender? Can anybody teach me? I am acquainted with Blender, and have made a snowman and a dinosaur, based on a tutorial. *!greengrin!*

I wouldn't even know where to start in Blender, I tried some of it and I never could figure it out.

It does have a very steep learning curve, but I've heard that it's defiantly worth it if one can figure out how to use it correctly.
