Where is everything kept?

Unread postby kin3 » Thu May 20, 2010 8:45 pm

In a route when you add content to the route where does it go. Where do the assets go, what folder? Where do loft items such as roads, fences, bridges, etc. go? Which folders?

Navigate to RailWorks' main directory and you can navigate through the assets folder for looking at what's there. The route folder is under content.

Thanks but that's not what I'm talking about. I have a route I'm working on and all is going well and then I see a road that isn't just right. I click the height adjustment arrow and fix it and save. Then I turn around 180 degrees and my track is all messed up. I think it made the adjustment to all track objects when I adjusted the road. I have a backup and think I will replace the network folder and all my scenery objects will not be affected. I did just that, now my loft bridges and roads are gone but the track is back like it should be. My questions is where is the loft road and bridges stored at? What folder would they be in? I would like to recover them rather than redo them.

I'm not a good communicator so bare with me.

Kinnie, I feel your pain, been there and done it. Except I did it yesterday working on a grade not realizing I had selected a whole lot of grades, not just the track I was working on. I got it fixed but I had saved too quick before I realized what I had done. Don't know the answer to your question, just empathizing with ya.

Hi,

Though this is not a direct answer to your question, a possible way of helping to resolve issues like this is to have the automatic backup function enabled. It is in the launch options for railworks inside the RW properties in Steam, you can enter "--enable-backups" there (without the quotation marks, of course, but with the double dash in front). This will make RW backup ANY file that you modify each time you save your work (route/scenario).

This way you can go back to a previously saved state if something gets messed up in the editors.

About your concrete question, the lofts and roads are boths stored in the folder Networks (see subfolders Loft/Road Tiles and the files lofts.bin and roads.bin.) So if you want to recover only the tracks from an older backup, leave these two folders and files in place and only paste the Track Tiles folder and tracks.bin file. It should work.

Hope this makes some sense.

Cheers,
Michael

Is there a trick to the backups? im used to making a map modification then hitting play then going back into edit over and over plus how do you quit w/out saving if i messed something up besides ctrl-atlt-del this gets more important as im making a doubledekcr bridge light rail on top of freight/passenger by stacking bridge pieces roadway my method for adjustments is to make a click with the grade tool and 90% the time it snaps to all the road and track around so i deselect then select the grad tool and click the arrow i want to use. Its complex and im sure all the extra points add to the file size. Is there a way to disable the snapping or toggle it?

The Networks folder is where all road, track and loft items go. Use WinZip or WinRar to back things up:

-> Loft Tiles folder (Lofts.bin not important for the backup)
-> Road Tiles folder (Roads.bin not important for the backup)
-> Tracks.bin and Track Tiles folder (TOGETHER!!)

It's important to always backup the Tracks.bin and Track Tiles folder together, as each must be in perfect sync. The Loft and road Tiles folders contain all the needed data for those items - their corresponding *.BIN files must be present to work, however.

I usually use the following naming of my own backups (example using today's date):

-> Track_052110a.zip
-> Track_052110b.zip
-> Track_052110c.zip
-> etc.

I usually do this only for major changes to the track, or at the start of the day before I begin editing. I also make a weekly Networks folder backup that I transfer to a flash drive. All daily backups are purged if more than 1 week old, and weekly ones removed after 1 month. Except for weekly backups, I usually keep the zip files in a temp folder within the Networks directory. Complete route backups are done in a similar fashion on a weekly basis.

This is an FYI type of thing as sometimes when working on a route the areas can become difficult to work with.

You can rename the folders temporarily so that the items do not show up in the game. For example, you may be working on roads only and do not need to see the track, you can rename the tracks.bin file to ztracks.bin and rename the Track Tiles folder to ZTrack Tiles. The same goes for the Roads and Loft bins/folders.

You can also rename the MixMap (ground textures), Scenery and Terrain folders if you want to remove those parts from the route while you edit it. This helps sometimes on routes that are heavy with items on top of each other such as scenery items under/over track or in this case where working on the roads corrupts the tracks files.

I only say this if you are working on roads only and do not need to see the track. Maybe this would prevent the tracks files from becomming corrupt.

Make sure you do not have any xml copies of the bin files in the directory as the game will look at those even though the bin files are renamed. For example, you have a tracks.bin and a track.xml. Renaming the tracks.bin, the game will still show tracks by reading the tracks.xml file instead.

Of course, removing the tracks makes the 2d map pretty useless but you can still paint or move scenery around and not have to worry about accidently selecting tracks or a roads by mistake. Sometimes helpful.

Yep - I do the same. Depending on what I'm working on, this also speeds loading of the route when doing a lot of modeling, exporting, and testing.
