Klamath Falls to Dunsmuir

Is anyone working on the route from Dunsmuir, CA to Klamath Falls Oregon? If so I'd sure like to help.

I am working on the route right now, I have the elevation data, and I have built the mainline track from the yards just south of Dunsmuir to just south of the town of Mt. Shasta. I think trying to go all the way to Klamath falls is biting off more than I can chew. I am now shooting for and area from Dunsmuir to Mt. Shasta then on to Grass Lake. Just south of Grass Lake there is a wye that branches off the the town of Weed to the west and I will include that also.

I was looking into doing this route, but changed to something I'm more familiar with, plus I don't have the needed profile data for the Black Butte sub or Siskiyou line.

You could extend to Grass Lake which was the upper-most portion of the pusher district - the lower section ended at Black Butte, but most trains just kept on going until the summit. If steam era, extend the tracks a bit more to Leaf to include the wye there (also one at Grass Lake), and maybe even Mt Hebron to include one or two small industries that once stood. Not much if anything past there until you get to Klamath Falls.

From Black Butte head to Weed, and then terminate the track a mile beyond this will give you the lumber mill - nothing much past that until you get to Montegue, and not much traffic either. Most traffic was from Ashland or Medford heading north to Eugene. IIRC, most traffic on the southern end came directly from the mill at Weed and headed to Dunsmuir before it was re-blocked in the lower yard for the march north (RR-west) to Klamath. Don't worry about the McCloud RR at Mt Shasta - extend it a mile for AI traffic only.

IMHO, Dunsmuir to Grass Lake, Black Butte to Weed should give you a very nice route.
Cheers!

The wye at Leaf during the steam days was for the interchange of Long-Bell's extensive logging line based out of Tennant. Logs would be picked up by the SP and hauled to the mill at Weed. This ended around 1956. There was a wye at Mt. Hebron which was the beginning of the grade on the west bound climb to Grass Lake. SP used to keep a small stable of 2-8-0's here for helpers. There was a large mill and a logging railroad that ran out of Macdoel at one point in time and there was a couple of big mills and a couple logging railroads that ran out from Dorris. There is still one mill in operation at Dorris, but I'm not sure if it ships by rail or not. There is also a large grain silo at Worden just north of the Oregon border that has a spur in to it as well. The area between Weed and Macdoel is also littered with miles upon miles of logging railroad grades built by the Weed Lumber Company which was later bought by Long-Bell.

I've now got the mainline track laid from Dunsmuir yards to the lumber mill at Weed. The biggest thing was getting the grade set along the track so that even in the stretch from Dunsmuir thru the Cantera Loop and to the top of the hill the grade was no more than 2.5%. The DEM data and the decals I made helped but was not accurate enough to show the gradients and the track bed used by the actual railroad. I've found some historical photos of the area in the time period that I want (1940's) but I need a lot more information. I have got the turntable and round house installed at Dunsmuir as well as some outlying buildings and I am now working on filling in the yard at Dunsmuir, Mt. Shasta and the sidings going off to various business places. It would be really helpful if I could find some info on business places along the route in the 1940's.

A must have for anyone interested in the Shasta line.

Been looking for a route map for this area (Dunsmuir to Weed and on to Grass Lake). I found an old freebee schedule circa 1910 that gives some good information. I am working right now on the main scenery between dunsmuir up through Cantera Loop and to the top of the hill.... lots of trees. Being a newbee, did not find the UKTrainSim textures till after starting the route... grr. I decreased the max grade from 2.5 to 2 as it was just too steep.

I am kind of bummed, I was hoping to release this route when it is done as a free route. I've tried to not use assets from pay routes but some can not be helped because I can not find a free asset to use instead. This is especially true for scenery items. For example I needed a warren truss bridge in different lengths to span rivers and canyons. The free scenery items for US based routes is pretty limited. I might have to give up the idea of releasing the route to the general public. I have tracks laid from the yard south of Dunsmuir up through the Cantera loop and on to the top at Mott, the the track goes to the town of Mt. Shasta and on to the wye at Black Butte, one branch of the wye is laid to the town of Weed and the lumber mill there, the other branch of the wye is now laid almost all the way to Grass Lake. The scenery along the river from Dunsmuir to Mott will be pretty nice but again trying to find the assets I need that are free is very hard.

There is nothing to prevent you from releasing it to the public even if it requires some payware. You just don't include those objects and tell people they are required if you want to use it. Those of us who are fairly hard core probably already have the stuff and it's always someones choice how bad they want to run a route. I would hate to see you not put out a route for that reason.

That sound OK but is there an easy way to list all the extra stuff you used so that I can put together a readme that explains what is needed?

You can use your asset filter as a guide (the ones you marked with a check) as to what add-ons are required.

You might give "jpetersjr" a PM see if he can make a bridge for you. Or just check his website: http://chungington-routes.webs.com/ I know he's modeled a bunch of bridges already. Just a thought. *!!wink!!*

I am considering redoing the route with some 1/9 DEM data. I downloaded a small portion and it look great but there are a couple of "holes" in it where tiles are empty. Is there any way around this problem? I used the newest version of ReDem and a path I created in Google Earth. It always seems that ReDem does not find all the tiles it could find. Don't know how to fix that either.
