CSX A-Line: Charleston, SC to Florence, SC

Unread postby donjgatlin » Sat Oct 06, 2012 1:26 pm

Hello All!

I've been playing Railworks series for a long while and now I'm looking to try my hand at route building. I don't quite have the experience to make top notch routes like some of you, but I would like to attempt to build the CSX A-Line from Charleston, SC to Florence, SC. This route is mainly rural through forests, swamp lands, and crosses numerous rivers. Much of the line is single track, but there are stretches where there is double track and/or passing sidings. The speed limit's along this route are approx 60 for freight and 79 for Amtrak. There are three station stops along the way for Amtrak- Charleston, Kingstree, Florence. The primary traffic along this line appears to be intermodal, coal, and mixed freight. Coal train's serve the Santee Cooper power station in Cross, SC which I would like to include in the route if possible. There are two major rail yards at each end of the route, CHS and FLO. This route will take a while to complete, possible over a year's time, but I think it can be done. I do not know much about how to get data like DEM and Decal's into the software, but understand how the editor works. If anyone would like to assist me or link to tutorials on how to accomplish this route, it will be appreciated. Much help will be needed. Also, if anyone would like to or would be generous enough to, I am completely open to outside help (via chat) or even others working with me on the project.

My Question: Where should I start?

Update:

This afternoon I played around with the editor for a while to get the hang of how it works. Haven't used it in a while, but it's as simple as it had been before. Now, I have created the Blueprint for the Route and need to obtain and import DEM and Decal Data.

Have ran into an issue while trying to configure RWDecal. I have already created my developer folder and am in the process where I have to locate/define it with RWDecal. The issue is that it doesn't seem to recognize my folder as a 'Valid Developer Folder'. Have attached two screen shots; one of the folder, the other of the error. What is the solution for this error?

The above error, I have solved. However, it has ran into a much larger issue. Where should I be storing my developer folder? Currently there are two places. One is within the Common App's folder within steam. The other is within the actual Railworks Folder. I'm going to assume I originally put my developer and source files in the wrong location and continue working. If someone could verify this, it would be great.

Folders should be:

Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Source\developer name

Other info can be found in the old RSDevTools docs at Railsimulator.com: http://www.railsimulator.com/support.php
Cheers!

I'm trying to import STRM Data (.hgt) into Railworks editor. With the first screen shot, do I even have the proper data format? I have already placed the .hgt files into my DEM/STRM folder, but when I import it within the editor, I do not see any differences in the elevation. To be sure, which options on the second screen shot should I be using to import the data.

Edit: I think I may not have the proper file type. That file for .hgt seems WAY too small to have all the elevation data for the area I'm building. I've looked all over, however cannot find a straight answer/guide on how to obtain and import terrain data. If I found where to get it, I didn't know what type of file to download or what to do with it. If anyone can assist, I would appreciate it. *!sad!*

I have decided that for now I will remain on the consumer end of this market. So, it looks like the A-Line won't be coming, for now at least. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to create the line, but for now it's a bit too difficult with time constraints to learn a new software.
