Hi, All! Once again I'm stymied by this procedure. I have the DEM files from the GeoBase site, and using MICRODEM, am able to open them into a data base set, merging them into a map. However, I cannot find the option to convert to .bil. Previous instructions by Toripony said to open the Dem files, and Save as .bil. Another suggestion said to change the file names from .dem to .bil. Using Windows 7, I no longer find these option. Any suggestions as to what i need to do here? Cheers; Chuck F.

Hi! I'm trying to re-do work I started over a year ago, and things are not working for me, so it's back to basics to start over again. Where is the info or tutorials as to how to create and load elevation data into RW? Cheers; Chuck F

- http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm go there
-select your region you want to download
-click on modify data request
-select 1/3 and 1/9 arc second and change the data format from ArcGRID to BIL_16INT
-clink ''save changes & return to summary
-click download and wait until the data is ready to download.
-after downloading extract the files and open BILxSRTM : http://www.mediafire.com/?vuby9jvdk8r7drm
-select your extracted folder and set up your SRTM directory and select 1/3 arcseceond
-then just click on start and you'll get your .hgt files witch you need to paste into C:/Railworks/DEM/SRTM
-in Railworks jump to the right coordinates and click on the terrain button in the world editor
-select then the button were it says ''import''
-change Area to 19x19 and click import Terrain DEM

Now your done

What does this method offer over ReDem?

you get the whole terrain and not just the half like with redem if you haven't purchased it

OK, so if you own the full ReDem then there is really no difference between these two methods?

yeah but its easyer for myself to get the terrain with the above-described method

Hi, Kevin! Thanks for your reply. I've used the above method for US routes, and the procedure worked. Now I'm trying to do a Canadaian route using data from GeoBase. I get the DEM files, and MicroDem opens up the DEMs and merges them into a map, but I can no longer find the option to save as a .bil file, so therefore I have nothing for BilxSTRM to work with.. Just re-naming the .DEM to .bil does not work as I get an error that files are missing. I know I've used this meothod before, but I'm wondering if MicroDem has modified their functions. I can't get the map to load on the seamless map viewer.

try to change your internet explorer. The page is very slow to show up and i had the same problem

I could never get that map to work. I had to use ReDem to get 'Suggested DEM bounds' and select using co-ordinates in the seamless menu. It worked.

I run the most recent internet explorer, and found that to be the problem. If you can not get the map to view select "Tools" then "Compatitablity View". Worked for me

Or try a decent browser like Firefox, Opera, or Chrome.

Hi, Kevin! What do you mean "In Railworks jump to the right co-ordinates..." Is this the Lat/Long of the starting point of the route, or somewhere else? Cheers; Chuck F.

yes you jump to the right lat..,long.., coordinates of your route starting point and import then the terrain
