Route Idea!

Unread postby bomuseumconductor » Sat Mar 24, 2012 12:20 am

Hello
!**conf**!
I would like to make a route based in Baltimore-Cumberland, MD. Granted there are lots of yards and the howard street tunnel in Baltimore. Maybe also have a working B&O Mt. Clare Shops, the light rail lines. No particular time period obviously. Im wondering how I can get started, what tools to use at first, and such. Thank you! Sorry if this is kind of an odd post in this area. Closest routes so far are HSC and NEC. Nothing in Baltimore and west.

Sincerely
Brendan

I recommend you purchase RWDecal. It will really save time with placing the track, especially getting that monster yard in Cumberland right. As far as terrain goes, it's a fairly smooth area so 1/3 or 1 arc sec terrain data would suffice. You could purchase ReDem but it's probably not worth it unless you find some 1/9 arc data. Lay all your tracks first, then get the signals working and make some scenarios to test. When you've got the operational side of it functioning 100%, go bananas on scenery.

Ive heard you can use Google Earth to get the basics for laying tracks?
And the yards im worried about are Curtis Bay, Locust Point, and the old Mt. Clare Shops at the B&O Railroad Museum.

Yeah that's what RWDecal does. It extracts decals from Google Earth. It creates markers too so in route editor you just place a bunch of decals which are literally photos where the markers indicate. If you get some terrain data in therer first, then place decals, you could imagine it's like laying track in Google Earth itself. VERY quick and easy... once you get the hang of laying track. Keep your eyes peeled for tips in the forum on track laying and don't hold back on the questions. There are ALOT of tricks that a few members know.

Are there any tutorials on how to get the files from RWDecal into Railworks and such?
