I'm just setting up the S-Line on my route where it runs through Hickory and up through the Southern Loops and was wondering how to find out what the speed limits are?

If you don't mind waiting, I can ask the CSX guys in Apex next week to look at their timetables, that'll show it.

Ok, they've let me in the yard office before, gave me 2 hats and a safety vest, and let me look around the break room, there were timetables and radios and all sorts of stuff all piled around, with tons of posters on the wall showing safety procedures and such.

I have a set of CSX timetables from 2005. However, it doesn't list the sub you are modeling as the "S-Line." Where does your sub run from and to? I'll be glad to email the pages you need in pdf format.

I'm modelling the Caldwell County Railroad from Hickory to Lenoir including what I thought was the S Line from Salisbury to Asheville. Well that's the long term plan.

The Salisbury to Ashville line is ex-Southern Railway. Hickory to Lenoir seems to be an ex-Southern branch too. I don't have the NS timetables, but I'll work on getting one.

PS - You might try contacting the staff at the NC Rail Museum in Spencer, NC. I'll bet they have an old timetable and would scan or photocopy the pages you need.

Aha, In that case I have at editions 1-12 of the NS timetables from the NC Piedmont Division. I'll go check them.

Between Salisbury and Old Fort is 60 mph for "rail highway trains", 45 for freight trains.
Asheville Yard: 20 mph on no. 1 and 2 mains between Murphy Jct (MP S-142.3) and Asheville (MP S-138.2): 20 mph
All Yard tracks no. 2-17 (MP S-141.3): 10 mph
All Industrial Tracks in Asheville Terminal: 5 mph
Between Ridgecrest and Asheville: 60/45 Except Asheville on wye track- 10 mph
I can't find Hickory or Lenoir, maybe they aren't on the Piedmont Division?
But it seems most branch lines in the NC mountains have a 10 mph limit for all trains.
I'm not showing Hickory or Lenoir in my NS tables, they are "Eastern Region Piedmont Division" And cover Central NC, VA, and SC.

Thanks for that. That pretty much covers it. Hickory to Lenoir isn't owned by NS anymore. It was bought by the Caldwell County Economic Development Commission in 1994 but I know that the speed limit for the whole branch is 10mph. I'm a little confused about the mainline that runs through Hickory. The S-Line runs between Chattanooga and Salisbury and passes through the Southern Loops at Old Fort, so the mainline in Hickory must be the S-Line... ?

My timetable I'm using is dated April 7, 1991, so Hickory-Lenoir should still be NS.. don't know why it's not in there.

The line was run by the Commonwealth Railroad of Midlothian, Virginia (according to some interesting info I just stumbled upon) until 1993 under the NS Thoroughbred Program. Then the Caldwell County Railroad took over in 1994. Except for a little weekly delivery from an NS local at a siding at the very start of the branch, NS have never operated the line themselves.
