Where'd my terrain go?!?

Unread postby NDORFN » Fri Feb 10, 2012 4:32 pm

All of my terrain except the 3 tiles I've been laying track on has disappeared! I looked in the terrain folder and there are now three .bin files for the three tiles I'm currently working on. All the .xml files from ReDem are still there. All the terrain for the whole route was there before I started. Can anyone help?

I've been slaving over this for days. I've laid the track EXCATLY to the prototype using every trick in the book to acheive smooth gradient transitions, exact curvature, proper superelevation and even incorporated the real life kinks, buckles and anomalies which makes driving around at the 10mph limit not only demanding but realistic. I want my route to have as much entertainment value per foot of track as possible, definately a quality not quantity line, and so far I'm acheiving it so I'd really like to fix this terrain issue so I can complete the whole 25 miles.

Here's some initial shots of what I've done in the past couple of days. It doesn't show as drastically in the photos as when playing but there is variation up to 4.5% grades on those lines.

Try this. Right click on the Terrain folder and select the 'Previous Versions' Tab. Hopefuly you see something like this.

And remember the three cardinal rules of route building.

Backups aren't a problem as I have about 20 of them in one hour increments since I started. Problems is, although the backups I've restored don't contain the .bin files that have appeared and are deinfately pre-problem backups, when I load them I actually lose ALL terrain. It's as if the .bin files were generated at some point and became what the game reads instead of the .xml terrain files. Some file outside of the terrain file is telling the game to rely on the .bin files and not to accept the .xml files. I realise that if I am somehow able to restore the original terrain I'll lose the tweaks I've made but aslong as I still have the 400+ pieces of painstakingly placed track, tweaking the terrain wont take long. I'm so close to giving up on RW for another 6 months AGAIN! !*hp*!

That doesn't make sense. Your track tiles are in a different folder and are exist separate from the terrain. What are these three files? Are they named similarly as the other terrain files (+000000+000000.bin)?

Yes exactly. It's the first three numerically. If I had to restart the route from fresh, could I use the track files so I don't have to lay them again?

Here is what I would do.

First back up what you have as-is so at least you can reset to this "bad state"
Next only restore your Terrain files, nothing else.
Last, clear the cache.
